Hello all,

I will be interviewing at NYU on Dec 5, and I would like to get people's opinions/thoughts/experiences with NYU. From what I've read, the location seems to be great, the students love life there (I hear they party a lot!), and I've only heard good things about Bellevue. Any thoughts from current students and/or people who have interviewed there? I'd love to hear what you guys think.

I loved NYU when I interviewed there. NYU is definately on the "move" and will probably be moving up in the rankings. They are building a new cancer center and bought a new 7 tesla magnet for their radiology dept. So, they are trying to lure alot of bright minds to NYU to boost their research $$$. Their curriculum is pass/fail and they have parties after each exam which is even organized by some office(student affairs?).

The gross anatomy labs were very impressive. The cadavers are prepped for the medical students. That is, fat layers are removed, incisions and dissections are made for you to compare/study/guide(ie left leg dissected while right leg is left for you to dissect). Research opportunities are vast and the location is great. NYU is definately one of my top choices (*crossing fingers*)

mine 2. For me NYU is up there with Columbia and UMich in the number one places I want to get into (can't decide between those 3 for my top choice). I was just overly impressed with the school, it has Bellevue, and it is the best location of all the NYC schools.

anybody interviewing there dec 3?

From the Curriculum Directory website, NYU is Pass/Fail for 4 years (except for elective clerkships)! Sweet!

Yeah, the students refused to stop raving about this throughout the tour. They're the happiest bunch of kids I've seen at any med school so far. Man, I love New York!

The only bad thing I've heard about NYU is that the professors are snobbish and some of the students think they are "all that."

I went to NYU for undergrad so I know what that is like. NYU's students were voted as the best dressed or something by some magazine. Most of the students there were either super rich, rode nice cars and wore nice clothes, or you were like me, cool and took the subway to school. 😎 😛

My friend is an MS1 there and she really likes it. NYU Med also has a nice match list.

A few words of warning. I have found out that the NYU Med apts kind of suck. They are on the small side too. I know someone who got into NYU Med ED from NYU for this coming fall and he is a major a$$. I do not know how he passed the ED interview. This goes along with NYU med students thinking their **** don't stink. My friend has also mentioned people that share his characteristics, but I guess you find them in any med school class. I have heard from my friend that there are certain cliques in the class. There are some ditzes that probably got in because of money but there are also some really down-to-earth and cool people.

All in all, NYU Med is a great school and students get worked hard. My friend told me about a genetics/cell bio exam where the highest grades were in the 40s or so. However, the profs were cool and did not count it. NYU's hospitals serve a diverse population. From my clinical experience at Bellevue, I have learned so much about NYU's commitment to underserved populations and Bellevue is just one example. I really loved volunteering there.

I wish you the best of luck at the interview. Good luck and remember to be yourself.

Thanks for the replies everyone............like I posted earlier, I'll be interviewing there on the 5th of Dec.

For those of you more familiar NYU, what are some pros vs. cons about this med-school???

Felipe, check your PMs.

Some of the sdn feedback logs write about dilapidated facilities and a relatively young student body. I believe NYU also has these required master groups that focus on humanities, ethics, public policy, etc. Check the website on that though.

Hi, there are a few incorrect things posted.

First, the first two years are pass/fail, but all clerkships are graded A/B/C etc... The 3rd/4th year electives are pass/fail.

The faculty are generally down to earth and approachable. There are also snobs too. That being said, I was just visited Harvard Med School and they are approachable there too, so this is variable... you'll find nice people and jerks wherever you go. This goes for the students too. The classes are ~160 people, so you'll find all sorts of dynamics.

The school is not all about partying. Granted, there is a party after big exams run by class representatives, and plenty to keep you occupied in NY when you have the time. The money from the student activities fee is entirely controlled by student council, so there are a lot of clubs and associated activities. But there is a lot of work to do too. With things being pass/fail, there is less pressure, but tests are graded and most people want to try and do well!

The housing is also variable. But the neighborhood is pretty good. You have access to a great private hospital (Tisch), a great city hospital (bellevue) and a VA hospital, so you really get spoiled with a diversity of clinical experiences in close proximity. There are also rotations available at North Shore in Long Island, Lennox Hill Hospital on the upper east side and Hospital for Joint Diseases.

THe "Masters Scholars" thing is a big program for broadening medical education. The only part that is semi-required are small-group discussions (~6 ppl) with two faculty member mentors each month during MS1/MS2. Most people like it. On top of that, there are regular lectures and seminars on things like medicine &law, ethics, etc...

Research opportunities are also good (and getting better!) if thats something you are interested in. Our residency match list is also pretty good. As I interview, I am finding lots of programs like NYU Med graduates!

All in all, I have been very happy with my education at NYU.

I hope this answers a lot of the questions.

Wow, we need more people like lurkerboy to brighten our spirits and set us straight.

Now if we were only as lucky as him to be looking at residencies and already be in med school......
