Thoughts on Cole?

curious to know what people think of Cleveland clinic/cole? Feel they get well trained and can flourish in general ophtho or a fellowship?
doubtful you'd be competent as a general ophthalmologist -- their surgical #s are too low. fellowship is mandatory. the point of that program is not to train comprehensive docs -- it's to train academicians.

I find comments like these interesting. Just how low are there numbers?

Posts in the compendium from 2007 suggest they have "excellent surgical numbers." Posts in 2014 suggest things have gotten even better "residents graduating with 140-160 primary cataracts now."

Does this mean nobody in the NYC/DC areas would be competent as general ophthalmologists?

Going for interview this past year, they quote an average of 170 cataract surgeries and say they're on an upswing to hit 190 the following year. That's why I pose this question. It has recently undergone changes but again, I ask for other people"s impressions to assess this. They also have a very nice state of the art surgical wetlab with very structured surgical curriculum with time every week.

As one of the residents at Cole, I can say that our program director has done a fantastic job with our wet lab curriculum (protected Wednesday morning for an entire year) and increasing our surgical numbers. The numbers that are reported are true. Fellowship is not mandatory. We have had two residents recently take up comprehensive positions and are fantastic/confident cataract surgeons. Regarding if Cole residents are well trained and can flourish in general ophtho or a fellowship, I definitely think we are well prepared on graduating from Cole Eye. Hope that answers some of the questions.

Not to cast doubt, just out of curiosity -- is the 170 "start-to-finish" phacos, or is it what the attending turns over? As in you do the whole case from draping to hydrating the wounds? I just heard ("on the grapevine") that some residents graduated with <100 cataracts in the last couple years, and thought that I'd be terrified to go into practice with that many cataracts even if they were start-to-finish.
