Hi -

My daughter (who currently lives in TX) is starting at the Veterinary School this fall. While I am an Oak Ridger, I do not know the Knoxville area very well.

Two questions:
1) could you share your thoughts on best areas/apts/condos, where there are other Vet students
2) is/are there any other websites where students look for roomates, share housing experiences, etc?

Many thanks
Jeff

There are several nice apartment complexes cropping up within a few miles of campus now. If she's willing to drive, west Knoxville is the "upscale" side of town to live on. There are lots of apartment complexes along Middlebrook pike that are a reasonable distance from campus (20ish minutes), and that aren't too high for rent. I'm pretty sure there are students living in just about every part of town. I've only ever lived in west Knoxville, so I can vouch for the niceness of the area, but I don't know much about what the other area's of town are like to live in.

I'm not sure about websites to look for roommates, but she should start getting emails pretty soon from upperclassmen looking for roommates, or that have places for rent/sale. So, let her know to start checking her UTK email account over then next month or so. Also, the welcome packet they send out should have a contact list for her classmates; there's nothing wrong with getting a head start on sending out an email for roommates wanted.

I may have an answer for you! My name is Amanda and I am a Knoxville native and am just now starting my 4th year here at UTCVM. I live in a house thats roughly 10-15 minutes away from school in a neighborhood with a few other vet students. My roommate recently moved out and I have a full finished basement apartment with it's own entrance in my house!
I think it would be a great fit for both her and I. I won't be home very much and I only have a year left. If she were to move in with me she could spend her first year having a nice quiet house to study in while she gets to know her classmates. That way, when I graduate in May 2012 she can either have some of her friends move in the house or we can just move out all together. Also, if she so chooses, she could move in to the upstairs master bedroom when I leave 🙂
The rent is roughly $480 and I must say I have LOVED living there! It's a nice and safe neighborhood and my dog and cat have loved it too! So, if she has any pets, they are welcome too! Let me know if she is interested!

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to post a reply. Amanda, I will pass on your info to my daughter. I know she is considering getting a dog and this might be a good option -

Hello Amanda. I'm Jeff's daughter Cara. I just sent you a private message with my information in it.

This website lists pretty much every apartment complex in Knoxville. I would probably stay away from East Knoxville and Fort Sanders area myself. I live just across the river and it's a good location. There are plenty of excellent places in West Knoxville, but I think do tend to be a little more expensive.

thanks again for all the feedback. Caroline arrives this weekend for a house/apt hunting visit and we will put your advice to work!

I live in Greenbrier Ridge off of Middlebrook Pike: It's a really great place and affordable as well!
