Hey guys I was wondering if you knew anything about IOL's adult psych residency. It seemed like a solid program to me and I expect to be ranking it very high, but I figured I would check if anyone here knew anything bad about the program first. Also if anyone knows detailed information on the call schedule I'd really appreciate it. I had something about 4 short calls and 3 weekend calls as a pgy1, which is really my only concern as it's a little heavy compared to most programs.

I've heard really bad things about it, but didnt apply there........

Hey psychotrope... Can't quite tell if your busting me for my post or your actually serious 😛 If you have heard bad things, I'd love to hear what they are. That way I can look into those specific areas personally before I lock in any decisions. Thanks for your help.

No, Im sorry I should be more specific....

I don't know any residents there or whatever, and gosh I never did a rotation there or anything......

just from talking to other through 3rd person stuff that program came up a lot as a malignant program. On several occasions.

Again, never been there...would never want to go there....dont know anyone who has been there.....so don't read too much into it.

My understanding is that it had historically been one of the suburban long-term specialty programs along with McLean, the Westchester Division of NY Hospital-Cornell, Timberlawn in Dallas, and Sheppard Pratt. Like all of those, it flailed financially when insurance changed, and they all either died or were retooled (eg, the McLean residency merged with MGH, the Cornell Westchester residency merged with the NYPH Manhattan progam, and Timberlawn basically went out of business). IOL closed its doors to residents (I think), but re-emerged at least a dozen years ago with some strong leadership (a couple of their senior people came from Cornell), but I don't know how it is currently viewed. I would, however, take third hand observations with a grain of salt.

From what I remember about my interview, I think your right about 4 short calls and each month there is one Friday overnight, Saturday overnight, and a Sunday day. Second year there is like 4-5 calls a month. Third year like 1-2 a month and none fourth year.

I liked the program too and am surprised to hear some of the comments. The program didn't seem malignant at all to me.

I rotated here as a medical student, and am also a little surprised that people have heard it's "malignant" (still trying to figure out what that exactly means). All of the residents I worked with seemed to be really happy with being there, hours seemed very, very reasonable, and when I took call with the residents it seemed very manageable. Again, this is a med student perspective, but it seemed like a very solid program to me.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I really appreciate it. I'll make sure to give my impressions on all the programs i visited after match. I still have a lot of figureing out to do, but I think this program may end up in my top 3 with Brown and Robert Wood. DCA it's great to hear from someone who did a rotation there thanks again!

I interviewed there in 2007. I was pleasantly surprised by the program. The PD, Dr. Bentman, and chair, Dr. Schwartz, both seemed awesome and I really enjoyed speaking with them. They are a small program, but seemed very invested in the personal development of their residents. They are also doing some good neuroimaging there with Dr. Pearlson.

Things may have changed, but my impression from the residents was that the program was pretty laid back. One resident told me she typically left the inpatient unit by 4PM. Not sure if this is still true....

drawbacks----location, patient population, and not so good didactics
in my opinion its good program but not so good compare to other prorgams
so it depends on where else you interviewing
