I am strongly considering University of Texas, Houston Medical Centre Campus for Biostatistics as they appear to have a great MPH program.

I would like to hear from anyone who has visited UTH and especially from current/former students who attended the university for public health and if they have anything to say regarding the Biostatistics department or UTH in general.

Thanks….

I'm a Health Promotion student at UT but I will tell you the Biostats department at UT struggles to graduate many of their students each year since they are often offered high paying jobs before finishing their program. 🙂 The faculty are some of the more laid back and approachable people at the school it's the exact opposite of what you expect when you meet math professors. The program is also very flexible there are few required courses and you pick those off of a list.

Thanks nietzsche754 for your post, any comments related to UTH will be appreciated...

Hi,

How is the UTH's epidemiology deparment and its faculty? Little curious to know I have been selected for MPH in epidemiology.

Awaiting reply ....thanks.

I can't really fairly comment on the epidemiology department as it's not my best subject. I just show up and try not to dose off. 😀 There are a lot of job opportunities locally though for people who take epi courses and they are the largest department in the school so they have a wide range of course offerings.

Hi nietzsche754, I've been admitted into the MPH in Biostats program at UTSPH in Houston and I'm not sure whether I should accept. Do you have any sense of the job market in Houston for people w/ MPH in Biostats? Bc I really want to work in Houston. Thanks!! 🙂

You should accept your biggest decision would be whether or not you want the job before or after you graduate. 😎

Hi DrDolly, I'm also considering the MPH program in Biostats at UTSPH, and I was wondering what attracts you to the program. Why do you prefer it over the MS in Biostats? I'm having trouble deciding between the MS and MPH.

By the way, have you decided whether or not you'll be attending? 🙂

Thanks Nietzsche754! That's good to hear. 🙂 Do you have any thoughts on the MPH in HCM program at UTSPH? Like what sorts of positions have previous MPH in HCM grads obtained in Houston? Thanks!

The MPH does not require a thesis while it is required for the MS. So if you have no plans to get a doctorate pursue the MPH you will save a good deal of time and money. Also on the other question does MCH = maternal and child health if so that is a popular program at UT and is very high demand nationwide especially if you want to work for a local health department.

Thanks nietzsche754! I think I'm definitely leaning towards the MPH... Oh sorry, I meant the MPH in Healthcare Management Program. Do you know of recent grads that got jobs in Houston afterwards with that degree? Do you have any general thoughts on the program and Houston market? Thanks again! 🙂

I will tell you I think you can finish the biostats degree quicker because of all the specific course requirements you need to get the MPH in Management and so depending on your financial aid package that may matter (sometimes they give you in state tuition for the first 12 months if you are an out of state student). At the same time I would think you would stand to make more money at the Master's level with a Management degree and some of my favorite faculty are in that department. As for which one you go with it should really ideally be based on the program you are most interested in.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, nietzsche754! I really appreciate it. Seems like UTSPH is the right place for me! 🙂
