Any idea if by visiting a school pre- interview (<1 hour drive away), it shows initiative that you want to attend the school if it is your #1 choice. Curious on this. Thanks!

They act of just driving 1 hour there and walking around, would really have no benefit. However, let's say you actually spent some time exploring what the school had to offer and attended some kind of event there (not just a premed meeting) that really showcased something the program had to offer, that would be a start. You could then include this in a letter of interest stating supporting why you want to attend the school. However, just writing "the facilities were nice" would probably not have any effect. Even so after all this, the school may not even take letters of interest into account. The general thought is that it couldn't hurt though. I actually did visit a school I was applying to pre-interview and added information about the visit in a letter of interest. A few weeks later I ended up getting an interview invite. Who knows if it actually, helped but it didn't hurt. The school was halfway across the country though and I visited it while I was in the city for an interview at a different school.

I once visited a med school before even applying to it because I was visiting my brother who was attending the undergraduate school. They practically laughed at me and told me to go online to find out more information.

Yeah, med schools aren't as accustomed to this as undergrads are. The tours are meant for interviewees not as open-houses. My school permits them, but I can say with a high level of certainty that there isn't any positive benefit of doing it here.

As has been mentioned, this isn't undergrad. Call first and find out if this is commonly done. If not, tread lightly. You don't want to make somebody's job harder. You'll get a tour with your interview.

When I visited pre-interview, I didn't talk to anyone or set-up a tour or anything like that. I just explored on my own and saw what the school had to offer, what kind of things were going on, and saw some presentations or research projects and medical devices. Just go on your own and don't go anywhere you are not supposed to if that's what you're planning on. Don't get your hopes up on it helping towards getting an interview though.

The laughed at me when I went to visit the Eiffel Tower. And Big Ben. And the Pyramids of Egypt. And they mocked me for wanting to see the mona lisa at the Louvre. They said just google image that @#$%.
