Hello ! They told me to post this in dental thread instead of pre-dental.

Hello everyone, this is my first topic. I am a 2nd grade pre-clinic(simulation) student from Turkey, Istanbul.
As I stated in the topic, I have essential tremor. My hands are slightly shaking. It isnt something noticable in Daily life but while working on phantom especially when I hold the mirror with my left hand it is noticable.
Some of my assistants while speculating my work noticed it and told me to see a neurologist(I am going tomarrow). This got me worried. May something like this cause me to be a bad/mediocre dentist in future ? I want to be a good dentist, whom patients advice to each other.
According to my search on internet it doesnt have any treatment but with some medicines (beta blockers etc.)the shaking can be decreased for a time. My mother doesnt want me to use a medicine for life time, what are your opinions on this ?

In preclinic, it never effected my work, at least I didnt feel so but assistant thinks it may be effecting my work without me noticing it. What do you think about this ? Only while holding the mirror with my left hand, it was shaking so I had to put my right hands index finger behind it as a support.

Could be stress, could be something neurological. if it doesn't really affect your drilling hand, you should still be able to do good work, although it will be harder with a moving target.

As long as your patients doesn't see or notice, I think you'll be fine. Use medications if you think it affects your clinical performance, but a good dentist is not judged by the merits of their clinical work (as long as it doesn't fall apart or look horrible), but by how they act/interact with the patient.

You could be treated with a beta blocker. Historically, people self-medicated with ETOH.
