So 26 is a wierd score to have. Obviously it is below average, and a person with this score will have some difficulty getting into an MD school. This is a stressful score to have. Some will say, "must retake" others will say "my friend got in with that score".

On the other hand, this is a somewhat acceptable score if you have a decent GPA and your scores are consistant (9,9,8). I am applying to 19 schools hoping that one will look past the MCAT.

So far I have received secondaries from all 19 schools. I'm sure I will start to be disappointed when rejections start pouring in post secondary.

Any thoughts from other 26ers?

ALSO ANY SUCCESS STORIES WOULD BE ENCOURAGING!!

I have a 26, and I am not happy about it. I got 10-V, 9-BS, 7-PS, and R-WS. My cum is 3.7, honors chem, and I have extensive research experience, as I am finishing up my PhD in Immunology and have 12+ research awards and 3 publications with 2 more to be submitted in the next two months. I am hoping that my being an hispanic female, 26, married with a child will help me out. I am really hoping to go to my local Canadian school, which accepts 25% of its in province applicants. I know that last year they accepted people with 24-25, so I know that it can be done. I am only applying to 4 US schools, with my in state being OHSU. It is really a back up for me, since I want to be here. Anyway, good luck with your applications, people do get in with 26, I think that you have to paint a good picture of yourself overall to the committee.🙂

Average is 24. Of course if you mean average for those accepted then you are correct. You have to remember though that an average implies that people both below and above the average are accepted, so a 26 is not hopeless. Specifically with strong ECs and LORs you would still be in good shape at a lot of allopathic schools and definately many osteopathic schools.
Don't forget, the MCAT is just a standardized test and it is only one small part of your application. Good luck.

which schools did you apply?

Here are a few off the top of my head:

Finch
Umich
Wayne
MSU
Albany
MCO
GW
Drexel
NJMS
Morehouse
and a few others

and 6 DO schools
msu
dm
arizona
nova
uhs
ATStills

and yes I meant average for getting in.

Yeah,.. 26 is awkward score isn't it? It can be pushed either way but the rest of your application.. but wholly unsatisfactory for me 🙁

I am a reapplicant with a 26. In fact I have two 26's. One 9,8,9 and the other 8,9,9. So go figure.

But, the first application cycle I applied to 9 schools and got 3 interviews and was put on 2 waitlists.

I figure that is really good for my score and my gpa is low also. So, it just shows you that you can get somewhere with the score.

This year I am applying to 12 schools and 5 D.O. so hopefully I will end up somewhere.

Best of luck. Just convince them that you have more to offer than an MCAT score.

I also think tha twith a 26 there is a good chance of improving if a next attempt is tried. In my mind a 26 means that there is potential, but maybe didn't put in enough study time.

I know many people at my school that have been succesful at getting in medical school with 26's. Don't be discouraged!!

although for Allopathic you should have >3.5 gpa with that mcat.

Two success stories:

Best fried got into Miami with a 24 last year and a 3.7 Science GPA. Had some good ECs, though.

Cousin scored a 26 and got into Colorado and Alabama. No idea what the GPA was. Very involved.

Either way, keep going. Don't lose hope and make the adcoms see what you have to offer their school besides a bunch of numbers. Get past that first cut, and it's gravy.
