I did some quick calculations and you have about 57% chance of getting accepted to a dental school. That is better than picking the correct side in a coin flip.

I took the 2004 DAT stats (count of first time test takers) and divided by the total number of enrolled students and got 57%!

at one of my interviews, the admissions guy told us that AADSAS reported only 1 in 4 will get into dental school this year. (found by #AADSAS applications/#seats) 😱

I remember seeing a link a while ago which listed the number of applications they had per year..does anyone know where that link is?

im not sure where it is, but the # of apps this year seems to be a lot more than previous years, and the stats for this year wouldnt be out yet.

youre bumming me out 🙁

Yeah I've heard the number of applicants is up between 40 and 45% this year.

You know what? I'm tired of constantly wondering about these statistics. Let's just compile some current stats on schools. I know plenty about the application process but it is mostly just from observations on this website. When this cycle ends....I'm going to speak with adcoms at all of the schools that I will be applying to for the 07 cycle and have them tell me exact numbers for this cycle. This will work b/c the adcoms that I've spoken with this cycle had no problem telling me everything that I wanted to know about last years cycle. I'm talking average GPA's and DAT's for in-state and out of state, # interveiwed, # applied, # accepted w/ degrees(masters, B.A., B.S., no degree). Anything that I can think of and then I will start a thread so people can add info that they know for a fact about the schools that they are applying to. I don't know when these schools will be able to release this info but when they do it can be compiled on this site for everyone to see. Then I won't have to wait two years to find out from the ADA or whomever. Between everyone on this network we should have a pretty comprehensive source of data.

I just re-read this post and I sound a little stressed/crazy, but I still think this is a good idea.

Hello,

Don't let the number of applications versus number enrolled scare you. This is because not everyone who applies to school X accepts the interview and not everyone got in school X decides to go to that school. A person applies say 10 schools but still ONE applicant. Your best bet of knowing your chances is to inquire the ratio between numbers of interviewed and class size for a particular school. DP

Hi folks,

I heard from a really reliable source (the Dean of a very good Dental School) that nationally, there is only a 6% increase in # of applicants--it's just that people are applying to an astronomical number of schools which is why schools are seeing a 30% to 50% increase in their applications.

So take comfort; I know I did when I heard that.

when i said # of applications, i meant AADSAS accounts. so for every 4 AADSAS accounts applying this year, 1 will get in. with this stat it doesnt matter how many schools everyone applies to, because their 1 AADSAS app will = 1 seat in dental school.

how many seats are there for dental school nationally? Anyone have a stat...or want to go to all 54 websites and add them up?

If I did my math correctly, there were 4,259 students entering dental school last year (not counting Loma Linda and Columbia...they didn't report their class size). Your welcome.

These numbers are on one of the ADEA Dental Education at a glance sheets. I don't remember the numbers but the most recent one I saw (2004) had about twice as many applicants as seats.
