I've been reading on SDN about the different tier (low, mid, high) schools that you can apply to. How does one find out the tier associated with any given school? I can't seem to find a clear cut guide, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunately medical schools are not ranked in tiers like the law schools are. So, generally, when people talk about a "top-tier" school, they generally mean in the top ten to twenty or so (more ten, than twenty). The same goes for the bottom only in reverse with a lot more schools, leaving just about everyone else "mid-tier."

Check out this School Selection spreadsheet:

School_Selector_0910.xls (173.5 KB, 7430 views).

It list schools by selectivity according to median stats. It is not the same as US News&World Report which includes other factors like research dollars received. Divide the list into 3, 4, or 5 groups and get a sense of where your favored schools lie relative to others.
