I am curious as to the actual amount of work and time the typical residency will commit a student to. I am a D1 right now and have yet to decide if I want
to specialize or not. My plans are to remain competitive so that should I choose to specialize, I can have my pick. To remain in the top 5 or 10 while in undergrad is not the easiest task and certainly takes a toll on you. Are the various specialty residencies as time consuming as undergrad or as challenging?

The only specialty I can really rule out as of now is pedo (although other people may like an opinion on it). If you don't mind, I would appreciate hearing about the experiences in each residency and GPR/AEGD as well. Thanks

Ok, from what I have gathered, OMFS is b/w 90-110 hours a week and very intense. Is this every week of the 4-6 years or are there up and down times?

What about ortho, endo, pedo, prosth, perio etc...

I would say it varies a lot depending on which program, how much trauma call they take, how busy the trauma call is, and if you happen to be the one on call. From the programs I have seen you can put in 50hrs/wk on the low end at easier program and 65hrs/wk on the low end of a more intense program. On the high end you could be easily over 100hrs/wk including your on call time, but this info is not really based on too much data, so I'm probably off a bit.

I would agree with that. The shortest I've done is go to work at 7am, home at noon. The longest was several weeks of going to work Sunday morning, going home Thursday night with a couple hours of sleep each night in the call room.

Ortho residency in general isn't nearly as rough as OMFS. We are usually there by 7:30am out by 5:30pm M-F if we don't have extra lab work/treatment plans to do. Lot's of journal readings, but that can be done at home. I would say I am probably at school 40-60 hrs week w/ maybe 5-10 hrs week of reading assigned.
