Very important question... hopefully you guys can help me out. I'll be starting medical school in the fall and me and my girlfriend have been attempting to figure out when the best time to get married would be. We assumed for alot of reasons that the best time would be after graduation and just before residency. However we are concerned about the honeymoon situation. Is there a break between the time that you complete rotations and start your residency? To all of you who got married during medical school or residency, when did you take your honeymoon? Thanks everyone 👍

Well, if you are already seriously talking marriage dates now, I would guess the summer immediately after 1st year (i.e. 10-11 months from now) would be the one in which your schedule will be most open -- not the one after your fourth year. But I defer to anyone who is further down the med school path.

My fiance and I are getting married next summer, between M2 and M3. We're delaying our honeymoon until winter break or just another time. All we have time for is the wedding and then a week to spend with friends/family that are coming in from out of town.

I agree with the above post. Your M1 summer is probably the longest period of free time you will have for quite awhile, and it would be the best time to plan a wedding and honeymoon. The M4 summer is also a possibility, but it depends on your school and how they schedule your senior year. Many institutions have several months of vacation that you can split up in month blocks, one of which can go to your honeymoon. Just ask your school counselors and see what they'd recommend.

Most of the girls who are getting married in my class are doing it this summer (between MS1 and MS2) or during winter break of MS2. My fiance and I are getting married during Xmas break and going on a cruise for our honeymoon. We're leaving the weekend after finals and coming home just before Xmas. You shouldn't need more than a week for your honeymoon (unless you're rich).

I'm currently a 3rd year, in a four-year dual-degree MD-MPH program. My wife and I got married between MS1 and MS2, and even had time to take a one week honeymoon in the midst of my MPH classes. A lot of my classmates also got married during that year. I also know of at least one person who got married between MS2 and MS3. She scheduled Step 1 of the USMLE such that she could take the exam, then get married and have time for a honeymoon before rotations began.

Don't know how your med school curriculum is planned but we have three months "off" during fourth year (to take step II, go on interviews or conduct research). That is when most of the people in my class are planning on getting married ... I think about 20 people in my class got engaged during second year.

Some got married during the break between boards and the beginning of third year rotations. A few are actually doing it during third year. I believe they are just planning on taking a month off and making up the missed rotation during fourth year.

I think the best advice would be to talk to the dean of your student affairs office and ask he or she when they consider the best time would be. But, also remember that it is your life and you can make anything work if you really want to ... most schools will be flexible. Best of luck 🙂

I'll be getting married between M2 and M3, next June...studying for boards for about 2 1/2 weeks post-final exams, then having a week of honeymoon before clerkships start. I'm somewhat worried about getting in enough study time for boards, but I know the feeling of finishing up Step I and then getting married will be awesome.
