Very important question... hopefully you guys can help me out. I'll be starting medical school in the fall and me and my girlfriend have been attempting to figure out when the best time to get married would be. We assumed for alot of reasons that the best time would be after graduation and just before residency. However we are concerned about the honeymoon situation. Is there a break between the time that you complete rotations and start your residency? To all of you who got married during medical school or residency, when did you take your honeymoon? Thanks everyone 👍

wow.. that is a question.

For someone who is starting med school in one month I am surprised that you are thinking about this. I would be scared of starting school and if I will make it and meeting all the new people... etc..

After first year and right after 4th year should be do-able.

How long do you want to honeymoon for. 2weeks. You should be able to do that.
Second year is possible but only after exams (comlex or usmles).

A lot of people in my class have gotten married during school. It takes some planning but shouldn't be too hard. Just about every school gives you a pretty substantial summer break following 1st year, which is probably the most amount of free time you will have. In addition most give at least a week or two off around the holidays in December each year. Finally, there is a variable amount of time between the end of second year and the beginning of third, but of course this is when you're taking boards. If you schedule boards early, you could potentially have some time off depending on your school. Some schools (mine included) give you a month off during 4th year as well (1 elective month can be used as vacation). After 4th year might be a possibility, but keep in mind this is the time when you may be relocating for residency/etc. Might be tough to have a wedding if you're also moving.

I personally got married over the X-mas break during second year. Worked well for me, and we spent a week on a honeymoon in Mexico. Good luck with your planning...it is very doable.

My wife and I got married after 1st year. It was great! There is plenty of time...unless your school doesnot give a good summer break like 99% do. We took our rime, got married back home, had a great honeymoon, and still had time in the summer to go and TA anatomy and do some research!

Hi...

I just got married a month ago today. I will be a first year at NYCOM in August and my husband is currently a third year at UMASS Med. We were unable to go on our honeymoon after we got married as he was starting his third year rotations the following Monday. As such, we will be taking our honeymoon in December. Also, I know that the only "free" summer we have as med students is the summer between 1st and 2nd year. So.....if December doesn't work out, we'll do it next summer. Hope this helps! 😀

Wow that's great news because I'm sure I'll be getting married sometime during med school and that time between 1st and 2nd year sounds like a great option! Thanks for the reassurance, I was getting worried about that. I also have a question about residency. I would love to be close to my future husband during my residency, and although there is no doubt in mind that he would move for me, I know that he and I both would love to settle in rhode island. As far as primary care residencies go, would I have a good shot at getting one in rhode island? Or is there never usually anyone matched there? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You'd probably get the best answer by posting this question in the Family Medicine forum 👍

I got married BEFORE med school started. My advice is to not let school dictate what your heart is telling you to do. If you want to get married, don't wait. My husband has been the #1 reason why I made it through this year successfully. Having a strong support system at home is crucial to making it through, and keeping your sanity.
However, starting med school and getting married are two huge life-changing events. It might not be a great idea to start them both at the exact same time-everyone says the first year of marriage is the hardest; as well as the first year of med school! In your case, summer after 1st year sounds like perfect timing. Good luck!!
