What is the medical school workload like during the year and on avg, realistically, how much time do students have to pursue volunteering, research, or even work part-time outside of school?
It really varies student-to-student. I don't know anyone who works more than 1-2 shifts per month. However, some people are heavily involved in research or ECs (10+ hours/week). This tends to lead to stress when deadlines are upon them. Make sure you're going to be able to ditch or defer your outside commitments if you need to.
