Random question: does your medical school give students time off to study for their Step 1 board exams if they are going to take it at the end of their second year? I?ve been to a few places to interview like Baylor that promise you can schedule time off for things like that, but is it standard to give 1-2 months off for people to take their Step 1 at the end of second year?

I think it's pretty standard (but I'm going off of what my school does, so get more responses). At Michigan, we get off 6 weeks between M2 and M3 years. People normally take about 4 weeks give or take some time to study and have 10-14 days to take a break (some of that before and some of that after the study time).

At my school, we're required to take Step I before starting 3rd year. I had about 5 wks to study, then had a 2 week break before starting 3rd year. I'm sure every school in the country gives you at LEAST 4 wks between 2nd and 3rd year... after all, they want their students to PASS (and do well).

We have from March 20th to April 21st (Prep for clerkships) and start clerkships on April 26th. However, our last block is a consolidation block that attempts to prep us for boards and third year, which starts on March 1st.

So, we have 3 weeks of assisted prep and up to 4 weeks of independent study. Most people give themselves atleast a week off before coming back for clerkship prep. I know I'm going to.

My School has a consolidation block (12 hours class a week and that's it) starting March 22nd (with spring break right before), lasting 8 weeks, then we have a year end test, and I we start third year July 6th. So theoretically, we have roughly 3.5 months to study for the boards, and last years class, the first with the new curriculum, scored the highest avg of any class in our history.

Ross gives us 12 weeks to take it and won't allow us to start our 3rd year till we've passed step 1.

I would imagine that most schools would want to provide at least 4, if not 6, weeks for Step 1 preparation. After all, their students' scores are factored into the school's own reputation. I at least hope that everyone has ample time to feel as prepared as possible.

To clarify, yes it is true, at Baylor, we are allowed as much time off to study as we want. Rarely does anyone take more than 8 weeks off to study though, as you can imagine that feeling of study burnout. Our clinical rotations begin 2nd semester of 2nd year, are self-determined, and do not require Step I prior to starting. Most people prefer to take their Step I after a year of clinics.

Ditto, except we get 9 weeks. Same diff.
