Hi guys,

I'm making my study schedule and I'm considering adding the following books to my study plan... can anyone give me estimates of how much time it would take you to get through them?

HY Neuroanatomy
RR Biochem
BRS Behavioral Science (shorter alternatives?)

In particular, RR Biochem and BRS Behavioral seem REALLY long, but behavioral is taught especially awfully at my school and it probably is my weakest subject... maybe I will re-evaluate after taking an NBME.

Also, is a 300 pg. book on biochem really worthwhile?

HY Neuro is a pretty quick read (1-2 days) except for the first chapter of the "mini-atlas"
RR Biochem is a good book, but I personally thought some parts were too detailed. I read it in about 3 days and annotated in FA. Looking back, I wish I had read the Kaplan home prep book instead. Oh well...
If you don't want to read BRS, the new edition of HY Behavioral is a very quick read (1-2 days), as it contains a lot less details than the BRS (they're both from the same author). However, the BRS has really good questions at the end of each chapter.
Hope that helps!

For behavioral, you can use the HY book--it's by the same author. For RR biochem, it's really only 200ish pages if you don't count the exams at the end. I don't think anyone can give you an estimate of how long either one will take to read though--it depends on how fast you read and how weak you are in those areas.

HY Behavorial should not take you more than a couple of days.

Biochem is really variable person to person, as Q said it depends on your background and your reading speed.

As for HY Neuroanatomy, it took me a solid time to just skim that book, its very dense but I would focus on what overlaps with FA and ignore the rest of the stuff. It should take a couple of solid days as well.

BRS Behavioral Sciences is a REALLY quick read. Don't be intimidated by the length. There were several questions on my exam that I would not have gotten from the First Aid behavioral section alone.

I got bogged down by RR Biochem and ended up just cutting pages out of the Kaplan notes and pasting them/annotating into FA where I needed more explanation.

I haven't taken the test yet, but it seems to me that the biochem section of FA is actually pretty complete, it's just not particularly well-done or well-integrated. In some places they just pull little pieces of a pathway out of context or omit a co-factor or enzyme that seems important.

I'm about two weeks into my four week review and so far my biggest piece of advice would be to not get bogged down in your weak subjects...it's still probably a good idea to start with your weaknesses, but just realize that you may not learn them to your satisfaction whether you spend two or four days on them. I spent almost a week on biochem and neuro with no change in my daily Uworld scores - after two days with RR Path and Goljan my score jumped 4%...

As mentioned above, HY is a quick read for Behavioral.
