Timing of interviewing for jobs vs when you start the position

I would like to relocate to a city where I used to live, which is about 3 hours away, because I don’t like the area in which I currently live. I completed my postdoc here and subsequently was hired as a psychologist within the same hospital system once I became licensed. The postdoc and the job I currently have both given me excellent professional opportunities, but I can’t see my family and I being here long term. August would be the earliest I could move based on a variety of factors.

My question is: if I plan on being able to move/start a new job in August at the earliest, when do I start applying to jobs in the city in which I’d like to live? I am unsure how soon after interviewing a person hears back if they are extended an offer of employment and how soon after they are expected to start, as my only job being licensed was just me continuing within the same system. I appreciate any insight.

What kind of settings are you looking at? VA? Community mental health? Private practices? AMCs?

Pediatric primary care (technically part of AMCs) and inpatient psychiatric hospitals.

Ah. Neither I have much experience with for jobs.

But as a general guideline from my experience I would think the bigger/more formal the organization the longer out you should start your process (definitely for VA).

If I were you I'd probably want to have something accepted by June-ish to give enough notice at your current position and figure out moving logistics. So I would probably start looking seriously in January and applying around March. Many position start dates are negotiable in the offer/acceptance process. All of mine have been.
