Hi guys,

Many schools recommend 2 semester of English/Writing. I was wondering how important it was to have that done before applying. I was thinking of taking my second one fall of senior year so schools wouldn't see a grade in the class, merely that I am taking it. Is it important to have it done with a grade before applying?

Also I've already taking one writing course (Fall of freshman year), should my second english class be another writing course or just any class within the english dept that requires plenty of writing?

Thanks! 🙂

I think as long as they are completed prior to matriculation, you should be fine.

You're planning on doing poorly before you even begin?

one thing to note is that Cornell requires completion of any pre-reqs before Jan 31st of the year you plan on matriculating.

so if you plan on matriculating in 2011, you should have taken all necessary english classes by january 31, 2011.

just something to keep in mind

With Cornell being an exception I guess, courses only need to be taken before matriculation. There may be other exceptions though, so check with schools you are interested in.

I definitely don't plan or foresee myself doing poorly. I would much rather take classes within my major or some extra bio classes rather than taking and english class.

Thanks for the input everyone!

hey guys,
This doesn't really make any sense, if the premed requirement for english can be stalled after the application process, why don't people stall other hard premed requirements (eg: orgo 2) till say first semester of senior year assuming u apply during junior year? How does not having a grade for an english required class before you apply not hurt you?

People generally don't stall the science requirements because they are helpful for the mcat, which most people take before/while they're applying.

If a school specifies that the requirements are needed before matriculation, not before acceptance - then it shouldn't matter. But if you can fit the class in before you apply then there are no worries about that.

Most pre-meds are stronger in sciences and can always use the sGPA boost so delaying science classes doesn't make sense. Plus the schools will often want to evaluate how you handle the "difficult" classes. And if you apply to a lot of schools, who wants to be worried about an orgo test when they come back from an interview?
