Just curious about how tutoring works at other schools. Our school provides large group and small group tutors (usually from the class above yours) free of charge. In the past few years, the anatomy tutors have been running mock practical exams about a week before our real anatomy lab exams. Aparently, this is a volunatary thing for the tutors to be doing, and as a result, they expect the students to pay or "tip" them for their efforts. At our last practical exam, they didn't recieve enough money and where criticized by a couple students regarding the items tagged on the bodies. As a result, the tutors canceled our last practical exam per the recommnedation of academic affairs (the group on campus that is supposed to help us from flunking out). My questions: Do other school have tutors that run mock practical exams? Also, does anyone have a situation where they are expected to pay the school's tutors out of there own pockets? Just curious...

dude at my med school, med school tutors do the practical exams for free. The extra tutoring, they might be getting pai by the school, but I know for a fact that students are not expected to pay. I wouldnt tip. If the med students want money they should get another job, or expect the school to pay them.

In my school the second years put on mock practicals for free. No you shouldn't pay those guys. But don't criticize them either if the mock exam isn't perfect. That's way out of line. I mean it's a pretend exam. Who gives a $hit.

I've tutored for years. You don't need to tip tutors. They don't expect it. But don't negotiate for a "bargain" price either. They'll just sit back and let you walk over the cliff. 😉

At my school we set up our own mock exam. We don't have tutors either. With a class size of 18 the prof has enough time to answer our questions.

I agree that critcizing the tutors is wrong. I'd like to know who in our class actually got on the tutors, but the fact is that only 3 or 4 oft he ~200 M1's were critical of the tutors, the rest of us didn't care. It all just seemed a little over-sensitive of the tutors.

Tipping the tutors, for what they are supposed to do. Hey I am a tutor and it is our job.

If they want to act like salvation army bell-ringers they should at least have a red bucket and ring a bell. The nerve of them taking the loan money of other financially poor medical students.
