When it comes to the job hunt, I’ve
heard from some that cold calling is the worst and to not do it.

Others have said that practices are more likely to ignore emails but calls could be more effective.

What do y’all think?

I can't imagine it'd hurt you with any practice. We like the PGY4 email if the candidate is strongly interested. If you can lock someone up without the full interviewing process of dozens of candidates, it saves a ton of time (and money).

Caveat being, it's hard to anticipate needs, 2 years in advance.

Hurt or not, I think a lot of people are doing it anyway

Who the hell cares if some practices don't like it or not? The ones who don't like it are the ones who aren't going to be hiring when you graduate. So who the hell cares at all?

You may find one that does appreciate saving lots of money if you're serious about a geographical region.

Yup. The worst you can ever hear is "no" or just nothing at all.

Make them calls.

I got my job from cold calling (email). It was never advertised. I emailed probably at least 20-30 people.

Well, technically the worst you could hear is more along the lines of "who the hell do you think you are calling me like this you GD millennial?" but that would be free advertising that you wouldn't want to work in that group anyway. I agree. Call away.

I did a lot of cold emailing to Chairs early in my career (was trying to get out of an "entry-level job" at a county hospital in early 2010's), it did not work but most replied and were collegial and helpful.
