Now, I have not really give optho any "real" thought through my first 3.75 years of school. My general surgery rotation was a bland experience to say the least...my attending didn't even know we were there, regardless of all the extra stuff we would do, and do well! A letter from my MSIII surgery rotation would not be an option. I have GREAT letters from IMx2/EM/FM/OB.
Now, why is optho in the mix now? Well, I recently rotated with a MSIV going into optho and he spiked a real interest. In addition, we had a couple of optho consults and I hade a chance to see them work and really think that I might have found a great fit!
I realize that I have not had a rotation in it yet, but I will get one in fourth year if it is not a lost cause without a surgery letter... I am making a big deal of the surg letter b/c the MSIV stated it is a BIG part of the application.
Now I am a DO student, looking into DO programs. BUT, I would love unbiased input as though I was John Q med student. Consider grades and boards top 10% for sake of argument.
For all DO optho's out there I am aware that I would need the traditional Internship, would this affect things?
