To how many programs did you guys apply?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
may be more helpful if you had a poll

Or perhaps some parameters.

Based on other posts I've read this year, the number is between 5 and 200.

IIRC, you're an IMG with some Step trouble who is just now getting your apps out. You should probably shoot on the high side. 200 is insanity but 5 is about 10x too few.

It also matters which specialty. A friend of mine doing ENT applied to 56, but another friend doing family applied to 10, so if you're just taking an average it may be skewed high if a lot of people on here are applying to optho, ortho, etc.

Internal Medicine: 52 (Including 12 DO programs)

IM: applied to 32, so far have received 18 invitations. So I think 32 was too many, and I am going to do 15 interviews max.

EM - 30.

Was too many. Withdrew from 15 so far.

IM - applied 22 - 16 invites - still waiting on 6 (mostly NE) - cancelled 9 - will interviw 10 max

General Surgery: 40 programs. 20+ interview invites.

Number of programs applied to is seriously going to vary based on 1) specialty 2) competitiveness as an applicant 3) other factors like are you limited geographically or couples match. It's going to be a wide variation even among same specialty.

Internal Medicine, applied to 28 with 11 interviews so far.

General surgery and plastic surgery
over 100

EM - 52 programs. Although it really, really depends on your situation. If you know you are going to have an uphill battle based on your Steps, grades etc. you really need to apply to more programs.

OB/Gyn - 29 originally, got 22 interviews and a waitlist, currently going on 16 but still haven't heard from a few programs. And I'm couples matching, so bf is doing psych, applied to 30 programs, got 25 interviews so far, still has 20 on his calendar but will probably cancel a couple more.
