To PhD or not?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
in answering this could people also comment on the ease of doing an unfunded md-phd at harvard hst? (ie. to enroll as an hst med student and then add a phd at some point. i guess could apply internally for md-phd funding but let's assume for a moment that i don't get it) if money were no object, would this still be undesirable? perhaps less administrative support/integration of md and phd, leading to longer graduation time? could one do his phd after his second year of med school, as mstps do? is there any chance that one would be denied the opportunity to do a phd once he is a couple years into hst?

i'm just curious, as someone who hasn't heard back from the mstp office and is infinitely more excited about getting a phd than an md. thanks a lot.
