To pick a school....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can please someone who is studying at SABA/SGU/AUC/ROSS contact me?
Im trying to pick a school to apply too and need to ask for advice
Thanks

I have to ask........ WHY? All these schools are pretty much the same, same opportunity and same future, the main difference is cost and if you will be accepted. Honestly I think you are making way too much out of this as many do.

Just research about the Islands and cost and acceptance then apply.

SGU is the hardest to get into second from what I have seen is SABA then AUC and ROSS.

Excuse my ignorance, but Ive heard that some of the schools don't offer rotations in ACGME accredited teaching hospitals which might create a problem later on when trying to get licensed in the states...and there is a significant difference in the % of graduates who matched.
I should be able to get into St. George as my GPA is 3.7 and My Mcat is (7VR,10PS, 11BS) it's just too damn expensive

None of the big four have problems like this all of them have ACGME rotations, I think you are hearing some of the rants of people who are misinformed, there have been rotations from time to time that where thought to be ACGME and where not, but ACGME rotations are not 100% needed for every state, only a few really. In fact there is talk of dropping this requirement altogether, its silly since US students do not have the requirement. ACGME rotations are for cores only and not electives.

WHY Caribbean when you should be able to get into a US DO school? 😕

Well my friend I am Canadian and things are not easy for us. I have been really researching my options.
With my GPA I have no chance in canada unless a miracle happens. I am repeating my MCAT in may and if I get more than 32 I will reapply to a US allo. If not I will go with whoever takes me.

Why not DO? It is actually the advice of my brother who is an attending physician in the States. But After contacting many of their residency programs I found out that AOA accredited programs do not sponsor for J1 nor H1B visas. So I will have to apply for an ACGME residency that is ready to sponsor for a H1B as going the j1 route is a professional suicide for us Canadians, this means having to lose a year in an internship before being able to apply for a ACGME residency and most importantly the chances of a DO getting a H1B sponsorship are as good of those of an IMG....thats why I chose to go Carribean

How come you are the First Canadian I have ever read worried over such problems? So many go to Caribbean and US DO and never have I heard of this?

Really I'm just plain confused? DO grads can get into ACGME residencies so that would give you this visa??? But why can you not pay for it? I'm a US citizen so I guess I just do not understand.

SGU offers all ACGME rotations. AUC offers almost all ACGME rotations. Both AUC and SGU offer ACGME-equivalent rotations in the UK (and Ireland for AUC).

Ross and Saba have a mix of both and you need to schedule carefully (and move around) to get all ACGME.

I wouldn't bother with DO, either but that is my personal preference.

Like you mentioned, unless you start med school in May or January (or if you take a pre-match offer), the H1B visa will cost you a year. The J1 will make life difficult and will result in being known as "THE CANADIAN DOCTOR GUY IN THE WOODS OF WEST VIRGINIA," for about three years to get the H1B (and to avoid being sent back to Canada for 2 years).

What is involved with the H1B visa? How much does it cost? I paid 600 USD for a 4 year visa to England for instance my sponsor paid 0 just sponsored me.

I'm confused over this, if you need a visa can you not pay for it? I know I do not understand.

Heres the whole explanation:

H1B visa: the Visa costs the hospital money and lot of paper work, however they might be willing to do it for you if they really want you and as long at you have your step three done. Why we like it? because after three years (not during residency though)we can apply for a green card and because it doesn't come with conditions like the j-1 visa.

J1 visa: all hospitals like it because it doesnt cost them a thing and does not involve paper work as it is actually ECFMG who is sponsoring you.

Why we dont like it? because to get it, you need a statement of need from health canada. This statement of need is only given for specialties they want, so lets say you are like the brightest guy ever who managed to match in neurosurgery , health canada can still tell you: sorry sweetheart we have enough neurosurgeons try to find something else.

Other condition with J1 is that you have to leave the USA after you are done your residency for 2 years unless you get a j1 waiver. In those two year you most likely won't be able to work right away in canada because they will take forever to give you your licence and you will probably have to pan handle or live on welfare trying to meet the 2000$ minimum payment per month that you have to pay after the debts you have accumulated.

To get a j1 waiver you need to go work in an underserved area (in the middle of no where from 3 to 5 years) and those jobs are even that easy to find, as every state is only limited to 30 waivers per year. So only 1500 IMGs get to stay on this paper per year.

for H1, you need to pass Step 3 first. But to take step 3 you have to graduate first and thats why you lose a year. for j1 you dont need to pass step 3 first.

You can get by that in a few states...but you need to make sure to do residency in those states or you take step 3 again!

Thanks for the lessons in being Canadian, it looks like it sucks from a Medical Student view.

Good points, Pro.

👍

Btw, how are your clinicals going?
