Okay, during my time in Undergrad I've always been respectful of others. In Gen Chem, Anatomy, Biology we had a lot of students that cheated during test, lab, etc... But it never affected me because our Professors never graded on a curve. I started Orgo around two months ago and my Professor DOES grad on a curve. So far we have taken a test and a quiz in class and both times students cheated openly. One girl walked into class and asked for a periodic table and our Professor told her that "she didn't provide them." This student proceeded to tell our Professor that she was going to use her phone. I assumed my Professor would tell her "Too bad, too sad" but she actually allowed her to use her phone. Of course, I watched this girl type in most of the questions on the test and other students began to follow suit. I counted seven students that were openly using their phones and our Prof. acted like nothing was happening (FYI: We have around 30 students in our class). Also, students openly talk in class and ask for answers. Like I said, I wouldn't have an issue with this if it didn't affect my grades. So here is my question, do I just suck it up and hope that I can pull an A in this class or should I just mind my own business.

Sounds like an institutional problem... making a complaint to the dept. head seems totally reasonable. This isn't normal.

If you do lodge a complaint - I *highly* recommend going to talk in person to the department head. Don't send an e-mail to multiple people. Ask them if they'd like to write a written complaint, writing it down tends to escalate things quickly, and may not be what you want.

IMO best course of action -- go talk to dep. head in person and be clear (not aggressive) about what you saw, why you're concerned and that you're *looking for guidance* on how to move forward & try to be as professional as possible about it. Key thing to think about -- professionals *do not* speak poorly of others, especially those above them. Keep it positive about your prof, and even if you hate their guts for this, make sure you're not saying anything that could be perceived as derogatory.

Speaking negatively of a prof reflects very poorly on a student, even when they are lodging a perfectly reasonable complaint.

IMO this skill is really important for anyone getting into medicine. Giving feedback to physicians/other paramedics could sometimes be sticky if it wasn't handled with a positive and supportive outlook. The skill you're developing here could be a great secondary response if you handle this well

normally I would stand by the phrase "snitches get stitches" (lol) but this is affecting you and your grades so I agree with Medic741. You should definitely speak with a department head. It sounds like the professor doesn't care so complaining to them probably wouldn't do much so I think going over the professor to the dept head is justified and I would probably do the same thing in this situation.

Thank you for the response! I am going to see what she says in class Wednesday about our test. If she acts like no one cheated I am going to speak with the Dept. head. Don't get me wrong, my Professor is strictly amazing. She takes her time to ensure we understand the material, if anything, she goes into overkill on information, but that doesn't excuse the fact she has allowed so many students to cheat. Especially with a small class size. Hopefully things goes well!

Hahaha! I feel the same way. I've had a few tattle tales in my past and it always makes me so angry. But I've made it four years in college without complaining about a single cheater, but when cheating stands in the way of an A or B, that is where I draw the line.

Keep it positive and you'll be good. Professional feedback & incidents like these are part of the game of life 🙂

Seriously though... play this one smart and have a stellar secondary response pretty much set. Those are worth their weight in gold 😉

Unfortunately it just sounds like your prof essentially gave permission by permitting phone use. That is insane to me.
She drives me insane. For instance, we have taken one test and one quiz so far. Both had multiple errors, so she interrupts the class, explains the error and allows students to talk/ask questions. I understand that Prof. make mistakes, but try and catch it before the test or quietly write it on the board. Sorry for the vent session, but I have never encountered anything like this in my four years of Undergrad.

They should ask if they can use their cells phones on the MCAT.
:laugh::laugh: I thought the exact same thing. Maybe, just maybe they will try lol. I would love for them to explain why they cheated. Them: "Uhm..... It worked in my Organic class. I figured it would work in here too." Test Admin::smack:

I roast professors on Rate my Professor for less than this and I am at CC.

This class sounds like one of those easy A Classes. Its not right that a big pre-req is like this is but if you are at a smaller college (class size of ~30) its possible.

Take advantage of the grade inflation OP. Get serious when you study for MCAT.

Edit: And to answer your question don't worry about others. If they make it to Junior/Senior year they obviously will not perform on the MCAT.

Haha I roasted her pretty hard on Rate My Professor.

I feel like it will be an easy A by the very end. Our lab usually last around two hours and she walked out in the middle of lab. I think she has hit the "I don't care anymore" attitude. It is super frustrating. But I am buckling down for the MCAT. Im currently using a website called Clutch Prep and studying ahead of my class.

If your teacher is in DGAF mode DO NOT say anything. I am not saying that you should cheat, but if ochem is now way easier that it would normally be you should ride that out and use the extra time to get ahead for the MCAT. Think about it. If you can get an A in ochem easier cause of this who cares what other people are doing.

Is this a community college? After my first General Chemistry exam, I was expected to know the periodic table from memorization. All in all it does matter, but they will be equalized by the MCAT. I studied my ass off to get the grades I did during my UG, I would have no problem going to the Dean to complain about the professor and the cheaters.

Wtf, this is a legit college? How does this professor still have a job???

Agree with most of the above except the bolded. If you see someone behaving unethically you have a responsibility as a professional to step in. If you see allow a fellow physician to take shortcuts with their work or "cheat" you're potentially risking the patient's health. If something like that happens it's not just the "cheater" that's in trouble, if you get named in the lawsuit your medical license is on the line as well.

Sadly, no. I attended a CC and they held us to higher standards. Holy crap... I remember we had to know the entire periodic table in high school, but our Gen Chem Professor told us we would always have a periodic table or phone nearby. So don't worry about learning the entire thing. I want to complain, but the dean strikes me as a "I don't give a crap" kind of guy as well. I may be wrong, but I don't want to muddy the water. So I am sorta stuck in a rut lol.
If you can't beat them, join them
I've thought about doing that, but I know the moment I break out a cheat sheet (somehow) I will be the one to get caught. Then that will be an interesting story to explain to ADCOMS later on haha.

 I've asked myself the same question. When we took our first quiz she didn't hand them back to review. So my thoughts were "Oh, I guess everyone scored well, so she decided that we didn't need any type of review." We took our first test and I missed even more questions because I didn't have a chance to review. Fast forward to the following week, NO test were passed out. I understand some Professors hate to make new test, but at least show us our papers. Heck, I'm beginning to think she just randomly assigns grades.

I wish I could make this stuff up, but every week something new comes up. Stay tuned to see what exciting things happen (FYI: We just had our first lab the other day, after two months of class :help:)

I'd report her to the department head and dean. Even if it seems like they don't care, informing them 25% of the class is pulling out their phones during the class and the prof is doing nothing about will at least warrant an investigation. If you're worried about it affecting your grade then wait til the end of the semester. Either way this lady shouldn't be teaching anyone, and it blows my mind that she's somehow teaching at a university...

Sounds like a problem with the prof. I really do not blame a class of average students for taking advantage of this if allowed to; herd mentality.
I couldn't agree more. I'm going to stick to my guns, because if I cheat it will only hurt me on the MCAT.

I'm definitely reporting her. I like the idea of waiting until the end before saying something, but she also teaches Orgo 2. But I can always take those classes at a nearby University. I'm not sure how she became a Professor at this University. It's scary because these kids will leave the class feeling like they can conquer the MCAT. But they will soon realize it is going to be a swift kick in the pants. Meanwhile, I'm studying ahead and still struggling lol. Thank you guys for the helpful advice. It means a lot!

I literally had the EXACT same experience in my organic class sophomore year. My class was about ~100 students so it was a lot harder for professors to catch people cheating, but this group of about 30 kids in my class developed an entire cheating ring. One of them would sit behind this kid who was brilliant, copy off of him, and then someone would copy off of that person and so on down the line. A few of them lived on my floor in my dorm and would laugh about how "orgo was the easiest class ever" cause they never had to study. Eventually my one friend and I got fed up studying for hours on end and only getting a B while they did nothing and got A's. So, we went to the professor and told him what was going on. During the next exam, he handed their row a different exam and when they all failed he called them into his office and told them he could've reported them for violation of academic integrity, but he thought this method was more appropriate. The amount of blatant cheating that occurred where I went to school was astounding. And I went to a very well-respected and prestigious school.

Oh my gosh!!! That Professor would be my hero from that point on lol. It is crazy that students will go to extreme measures to cheat on an exam, rather than actually taking the time to study for it. I busted my butt for the test, but somehow pulled a C on the exam. Then I walked into her office the other day to look at my exam, and sure enough, she marked one question wrong (worth 10 points). I carefully looked at it and told her that my answer was correct. Her response, "You didn't use the correct formula." I wrote a paragraph explaining how I came to the correct answer, then she said "Oh, I didn't even read that." I could've screamed, but I politely walked out of her office. :slap:

I went to a UC, people reported cheating pretty frequently in the lower level pre-requisite classes (gen chem, physics, organic, bio). What would happen is that the professor would just assign seating based on either your class rank, alphabetical naming, etc so that you could not plan who you were sitting with.

Also while I want to say that the people cheating will probably struggle on the MCAT (and get what's coming to them) this is not necessarily true. Getting an A in a prereq class like Ochem takes strong work ethic and dedication, especially if you have a full class load and EC's. When you study for the MCAT you potentially have all the time you need to learn a subject... and there's a lot of online resources now (khan, leah4sci).. so you can still do well on the MCAT even if you cheated your way through undergrad.

This class seems crazy. Normally profs are all over people for cheating.

Very true! I hate that it is like that, but I guess crap happens. FYI: Ran across Leah4sci.com the other day. I fell in love! I bounce b/w her, khan, and Professor Dave.

I thought the same thing. Heck, the only reason I would sign up to become a Professor is to bust cheaters. "Oh, all six of you decided to use your phones today. An F for you, an F for you, and an F for you." Lol.

lol i had 99 mage back when rs3 was rs2, and was one of the best days of my life.the untrimmed mage cape is still my favorite cape in the game .do you still play ? osrs?

osrs, if you know anything about pure clanning I was all about that scene and I have spied several others by username on here that were too.

rs2 was my JAM!!! I attempted to play rs3 a few months ago, but I just can't adjust to the gaming style. I'm thinking of picking it back up after the MCAT. And I wish I could re-do my account to get the untrimmed mage cape. For some reason I thought it was "cool" to get 99 fletching. Dumbest. Decision. Ever.

:clap: Finally people that share my Runescape lingo! Clanning is the one thing I never got into. I got into pking a few months before they changed EVERYTHING. Pking is the main reason I got 99 mage, but then they had to go and ruin everything lol.

add me in game tryyhard, i never liked clanning too much, but i did lure in groups of 2-3 but we only split if the loot was big so whoever got it , got it.
Anyone remember Zezima? I still remember spamming him for money the one time I saw him.
how could anyone forget zezima is a better question, that guy was everyones hero. i think he still plays oldschool even now but under a different name

oh yea also rs3 is trash IMO, if youre gonna start playing again do osrs, its as close as you'll get to the glory days. i got 99 fletching right now as my first 99 because its the best cape i could have at the time and the fastest/cheapest 99 but since i got my fire cape i've never touched it since lol

Definitely will! I may try and log on in a few days to see what all is going on. Oh my gosh! Yes lol. He was definitely my hero in the game. I wanted to have all 99's like him, but I didn't have enough time to get them lol. RS3 is a complete waste. If I wanted to play WOW or league of legends I would sign up to do so, but I liked RS because it was "simple." So if I start osrs do I have to rebuild from the beginning? The only thing holding me back from starting over is the Desert Treasure quest. I will forever hate that quest lol. Yup! That is the main reason I got 99 fletching. I just wanted to say "I have a 99 cape," but I never had the chance to get a fire cape. Even though they look awesome.

yeah if u start osrs you have to rebuild from the beginning, definitely worth it though imo. ive done desert treasure like 5-6 times and I still hate it so I know where you're coming from lol but like most things you just have to force yourself to get it done. Fire capes are easy to get now with the new "blowpipe" weapon but i still did it in d'hide and a rune c'bow you just have to know when and what to pray took me 3 tries to get it down , but i was so happy when i finally got it lol.

Crap... I worked so hard to get where I am on my character. Oh well... Hmmm... Maybe I can sell my old RS account 😏😏 I always wondered how people could get a fire cape so quickly! I guess that is the main reason I never attempted to get my fire making level up.
