Just to get this out in the open.

I've heard SO many comments lately about people hating on the new schools, namely UNLV and Arizona, that I can't simply sit idly by and let it go on and on and on.

First, people are ignorantly comparing the new schools to schools that have existed for 75 years or more, which in many ways is completely unfair and frankly, uncalled for.

Dental education *is* held to the same standard among schools, but you can't rip on the new schools because they "don't have clinics yet," or "don't have strong ASDA chapters," or any of the other lame remarks I've heard lately.

Recognize that the schools are new and take it in stride. YES, attending these schools WILL give you a vastly different experience than at other schools. If that doesn't interest you or excite you, and if you aren't a pro-active type person, then you might want to do more research before applying to these schools.

Not ironically, the exact same crap was mentioned about Nova 6 years ago, and now people see Nova for what it is: an excellent school with gorgeous facilities, a diverse and bright student body, a large patient population, and students who do well on the boards.

UNLV and Arizona aren't far off from that, they're just new.

*Rant finished*

😀

By the way, this is NOT directed at anybody in particullar, and is directed at VERY few SDNers.

Most of this comes from comments made to me by people interviewing at my school. Oddly enough, I've heard as much crap about Arizona as I have about UNLV (it seems most people who apply to one apply to the other).

I just posted here to get it off my shoulders, since I'm 100% sick of responding to dumb comments.

I'm ALWAYS available to help ANYBODY who needs it, but dumb comparisons are just crazy.

You sound like a dictator DUDE!... Relax!

How do Gavin's comments sound like a dictator's? He is simply giving a blanket response to all who have questions or pre-conceived ideas about new schools.

My sentiments exactly...GavinC...you rock...we don't need no HATAS period!
peace...

One thing that I think is a great opportunity at new schools is to be a part of setting standards, not just following them. I agree that it's a unique experience to be a part of building the programs up and is different than the more established schools. I think the stuff people are saying is what would happen to any new school.....almost like a right of passage or hazing for the school or something. It's hard to not take things personally when you in fact are part of that institution....an institution you worked hard to get to and are working hard while your there. You know what it's all about there, not those who have visited or heard about it through a friend of a friend. Just isn't worth it to let it all get to ya. Easier said than done...it'd probably get to me also. Anyways...have a great Christmas everyone, I'm off to Texas for a few weeks.

I didnt mean he is a "dictator"... just needed to know on how you guys would react to whateva someone says about GavinC.

GavinC, I dont have issues with you man. Just reward your haters with some wisdom knowledge, instead of fueling the hate.

Sounds like Arizona and UNLV are going through some growing pains. The first few classes unfortunately will feel the effects of this infancy period. Be patient though, it will pass, and eventually no one will care?

I can?t comment on either school, but I know a few dentists who went through a similar period while at the Universidad Michoacana De San Nicolas De Hidalgo. They were there for the first few years of the program, and fortunately for me could not express their displeasure in English. They did; however, go on to become competent practitioners and outstanding members of their respective communities. Hope this helps 🙂

They will be spending an upward $200K for their dental education. They're entitled to their opinions (especially this is a dental forum). Comments such as "don't have clinics yet" are not lame/dumb. Whether Arizona or UNLV turns out to be like Nova remains to be seen. You simply don't know the future.

UNLV and Arizona will be a great dental school.
Personally, participating the pioneer years means a lot more.
Basically the students can make the school as excellent as they want to be. Praising and "hating" are what people do. I would like to wait and see evidence (board passing rate, involvment in the community/clinic, high quality dental care) to prove that the new school can make it and I believe they can. (example, nova.)

Dont need to be frustrated.
Take it one step at a time, Gavin.
Prove those people wrong 😉

I agree with your statement as a whole, but found this specific statement to be a bit ridiculous. A dental school without clinics, even if temporary, is still a valid drawback of that school. If that is not a valid criticism, then what is...a dental school that is not teaching the use of amalgams?

I'm not going to mention any names, but it is more then just students that are being "haters"

At my Nova interview last year, one of the faculty that was interviewing me mentioned these two schools and the draw backs... was not very nice with their comments. Kinda funny bec I didn't apply to them. I just asked about the shortage of dental professors in US dental schools.

Gavin, Weren't you the one who was constantly ripping on NYU?

Don't listen to Gavin. He's just another cocky dental student who has nothing better to do than post stupid threads.

And since you've posted in SDN sooooo many times, you'd know, wouldn't you? A handful of posts and you already have opinions about other people in this forum? Please.🙄

Glad to see you're winning people over now that you've started posting.🙄

Why don't you try contributing something positive if you're going to post - otherwise go back to lurking.

Nope, just stating the facts as I knew them. In recent posts I've been highly congratulatory of NYU. They've done TONS to turn their program around, and all their students can testify of that.

I've been humbled LOTS this semester. Not passing exams will do that to a person, as will spending time away from the wife and kids to study. As will living poorly. You get the picture.

In any event, thanks for your post. It's always good to have more posters in the Dental area. Welcome to SDN!

Isnt it a fact that Arizona doesnt have clinics? Isnt it a fact that Arizona is new and still has a lot to prove?

Just playing devil's advocate here.

Your post is right on the money.

I'm speaking in reference to applicants coming to the school, and then ripping it because it doesn't have clinics and NYU does, etc., etc.

People saying "if I had known they didn't have clinics built yet, I wouldn't have wasted my time interviewing there".

Just to clarify, I spoke with Drs Martinez and Garcia today and both had differing things to say about their time at the Universidad Michoacana De San Nicolas De Hidalgo. The school did not have a clinic during their five year tenure and they often were forced to do work using only rusty tweezers and the little amount of Novocain they had stolen from local drug lords. Infact, Dr. Garcia told me explicitly that ?Mi escuela chup? realmente.? Again, I hope this helps.

Isn't it very ignorant to come to the school and realize that it doesn't have clinics yet?

AZ should deny all of those applicants, as there is no good to be around ignorants who give stupid comments like that, and rude too.

Who the heck are you talking to tinkerbell?? Your post doesn't make any sense.

No, Tinkerbell is right on the money!

To clarify my original post: I'm not complaing about people saying bad things about these schools. Hell, depending on who you are there are PLENTY of bad things you could bring up. That doesn't phase me, and I recognize plenty of turn-offs about my school (and UNLV).

My post was referencing those who apply to the schools and somehow come of appearing as though they are COMPLETELY ignorant of the fact that the schools are new.

Point in case: Several weeks ago one of the applicants in an interview asked me "Where are your clinics?".

I told this person that they weren't built yet, but that the process of getting the land primed had already begun (as is evidenced by city trucks across the street all day, ground being dug up, etc., etc.). I told her they would be done in a little over a year from now, just in time for the second semester of our 2nd year.

She then replied "Where do the 3rd and 4th year students work?" and followed that by saying "So that proves your school is crappy and you can't afford clinics."

I then tried not to roll my eyes but responded by saying that we are the FIRST class and so a) there aren't any DS3 or DS4 students and that b) we don't NEED the clinics until second year anyway.

Does anybody think she did ANY research before applying?

Yet another candidate took the pleasure of writing me a bright (not) letter which stated that our school "had nothing going for it" and that the ADA "must be cracked-out of their minds" for giving us accreditation. Right, of course, why didn't I think of that? LOTS of pre-dents are MUCH smarter than the 32 dentists that comprise the ADA accreditation body. Duh.

Those types of statements are what I'm referring to. People who have valid reasons for hating UNLV or Arizona--more power to you. At least you've made a rational decision (or I would hope so), and who am I to slam that?

If in 5 or 10 years the NBDE scores for Arizona or UNLV are downright $hitty, then EVERYBODY has the right to poke fun at the school. But we've got to have time to at least take the exam (but not according to the guy who interviewed in October and wanted to know our Board passing rate) before we can get ripped for our scores.

And yes, I found all this (and more!) to be extremely funny. Life's actually fairly hilarious. Agreed?

Don't listen to this troll. His every comment is justified by ignorance and stupidity.

OK, sarcasm just doesn't work on the computer. It was a joke fingerless. If I am consider a troll for saying that, so you would be a troll for your antagonistic remarks towards me. 😀

init4damoney,

is your avatar the real picture of your? Or some sort of a close image of your?

No, actually I was looking for a pic your mom gave me, that's all I could find of her. Definately the best pic she's ever taken. I heard you guys look a lot alike.
