I want to find a job in other states after my graduation, but not sure which one yet 🙄 . Do anybody know when is best time to start to send applicaitons? like in the summer before P4 or in the Fall term of P4 or in the Winter term of P4? Any website that I can upload my resume? search for openings? Is Monster.com a good one for pharmacist?

we have to take our license exam after our graduation. so, can I apply jobs before I got license?

thanks a lot

Jessi

Do you know what state you want to move to? Are you interested in community/retail? If so, I think I would call up the local district managers and ask for contact info of the hiring people in the state you are interested in. Then, you could either call or write a letter so the company knows that you are interested in a position.

--there are several places I am interested in now: Atlanta, Dallas/Austin, Pheonix, NC-chapel hill, San Diego.

Are these area saturated? Hopefully not when I graduate in 2009. 😛

besides the nationwide chain pharmacies like CVS, RideAid, Walmart, I assume there are some local pharmacies that I am not very familiar with. As I am in midwest area, i have no idea on what they are. If I just focus on CVS, RiteAid and Walmart, will my chance of locating a job be smaller?

-- I can only find the district managers' list from CVS from their website. How can I know some district managers' contact information of other pharmacies? In my area, all the pharmacies recruiting manager will come to school and you can know them. But for other states, is there any way that I can know them?

---Do you know how to find a position in clinical pharmacy position? I also have interest in clinical pharmacy 😳

I'm guessing your school will have job fairs when you get closer to graduation, you can get contact info then. You could also just call local stores and ask for the phone number for corporate HR or something like that.

Once you get more of an idea of where you want to go you could even visit the area and go and meet some of these people in person.

👍 Wow! Did you already know her before somehow?

I've always wondered how the whole job offer thing will work and just how bad these companies want us new graduates.

It is really amazing 👍

I wish I could be treated like that when I graduate 😀

No. I think she was just going pharmacy-to-pharmacy seeing all of the interns/pharmacists trying to feel out who will be graduating and who might want to move on elsewhere. I have her card somewhere...

I can't speak about other states, but if you're interested in CA - you can't even apply for a job until you are licensed in CA. You can't sit to take the State Board exam until you've graduated from pharmacy school.

So...after you've graduated, take the CA State Board Exam, wait for the results then apply.

I may have misread your post, but it appears you want to attempt to apply for a job before you're licensed. San Diego is not saturated, but it all depends on when you finish the process.

Also....ALL pharmacy jobs are clinical (my pet peeve!). Are you looking specifically for a non-dispensing hospital job? Those don't exist so much in CA unless you're also an instructor in a teaching institution. Altho....some big clinics, Kaiser, the VA & the UC hospital system are exceptions to that.

.

I'm in Atlanta area - you can apply and get job before you are licensed. I worked with a new CVS hire a couple of weeks ago. Basically, they hire you as a graduate intern (no idea what the payrate is for that) and you can work and train a bit on the system before you take the boards. In the cases I've known anything about, literally the dm would have the new pharmacist in the store the moment that they received notification that they passed the board.

Also, just FYI there are very few independents in the Atlanta metro area - it's primarily a CVS, Eckerd, Walgreen, Kroger, Publix city. However, if you are willing to go outside the metro area Atlanta area in GA, then there are more independents.

At walgreens the pay for a graduate intern is either 2/3 or 3/4. . . can't remember. Not too shabby!

Mmmm...

that will be tough that I can only apply jobs after I am licensed. I will graduate by the end of April of 2009. Then, I will take the exam and ready to work. IF I can find a job before I take the exam, it will be more relax before I start working. 😛

there maybe some differences from CA and my state. The "clinical pharmacist" here especially indicates the pharmacist who finished one year residency and take care of the hospitalized patients on drug therapy. They exist in every hospital. It seems they do not dispensing, but check the doctor's prescribing and let the tech to prepare the medication.

Good to know 😀

As you said the outside of metro area, how far are they from the metro? two hours drive?

Is there a lot of Walmart, RiteAid, Costco pharmacy in metro area?

Hopefully Atlanta is not saturated in three years, I love Atlanta 😍

Hii ,
A question of curiosity , will I be able to find any internship positions after 1st yr of pharmacy school especially in Philadelphia (and suburbs) area?

If yes , will it usually be a community pharmacy or can I try industries and hospitals n places like that?

Thx

I realize I should amend my answer......to apply as a pharmacist - no one will look at your application in CA without a license as a pharmcist.

However, you can apply as an intern - you just must have a CA intern license, which there is some thread on, but takes time in CA because the state bureauracacy takes so long. If you apply as a CA intern for a job - thats the job you'll get - an intern. That may or may not lead to a pharmacist job after you pass the CA board exam. A CA graduate intern does make a bit more than a student intern. You can apply to be a CA intern & be attending school in another state, so go online to get the process started (it takes about 4-6 months).

I thought someone mentioned somewhere about residents - residents must have a CA license if they are involved in dispensing or supervising techinicians, unless they work at the VA.

Now...for the bad news.....I just spoke with a colleague of mine who is one of the Savons which is being bought. She's not that unhappy her store is closing, because she is moving to S CA to be married. Specifically, she is moving to Cerritos - about 70 mi north of San Diego. She is having a terrible time finding a job. That was a surpise to me since I spoke about a year ago with a couple of SD pharmacists who told me differently. I have to admit - I don't know if its her or the job market. I'll have to pay attention more closely to what is going on down there.

I hope that clarifies things - let me know if not.

maybe the reason that it is harder to find job is UCSD pharmacy school start producing pharmacist? IF I studied in UCSD, I would never leave there 😀

Just for FYI....So Cal, is totally oversaturated. My friend lives in Orange County (Santa Ana) and he has to commute 1 1/2 hours each way just to an overnight pharmacist position at a chain....He said its really hard to find a pharmacist position, let alone one with decent hours. N. Cali is actually in need of people and inland Cali as well.

 The traffic is so bad in S CA you have to commute 1-1/2 h to get anywhere! Just kidding!!!!(well....not so much...)

Only some parts of N CA need pharmacists - just spoke w/ a regional manager. They need pharmacists in the very north part of the state - think Ukiah & N coast - Crescent City, Eureka, etc....Also - N bay area - Marin, Santa Rosa. No demand in S bay - peninsula (San Mateo, Palo Alto) or south bay - San Jose. Floats are always needed - thats the way to get started. Also - summer is the hardest time - too many recent grads.

It seems my chance of relocate to California has to be delayed until I retired or win a lottery 😛

You can post your resume and search for a job on PharmacyWeek: http://www.pharmacyweek.com They are just starting to get more retail jobs, but mostly clinical pharmacy. You can get hired before you get your license, they just work you as an intern until you are licensed.

Yeah - I would think at least 2 hours. I guess it depends on how you define metro Atlanta. Traffic is so bad here that it could take you two hours to get from Alpharetta to the airport. I was more thinking like Macon and below.

We have a reasonable amount of Wal-mart and Costco in Atlanta - no Rite Aid at all that I am aware of.

I stumbled across a pretty good pharmacy job website the other day while I was searching for internships- elitepharmacyjobs.com. I posted my profile and I have already been contacted several times. Just thought I would let everyone know about it.
