Hello everyone, I have been reading the forums for a bit of time and am coming here with my own dilemma in hopes of gaining some advice.
About me:
I am a second semester sophomore at a small LAC. I came here without any guidance because I received a scholarship. I love the extremely small class sizes and I have found that I thrive in the seminar-style learning system. Medical school has always been something I have considered, but I dismissed it because I figured people from families like mine do not become doctors. Thus far, I've felt lucky to even be attending a university, nevertheless in NYC. My school does not offer a majority of the prerequisite courses that I would need to complete as an undergrad. I am completing as many applied-science courses as I can while I am here, but I am itching to take some more traditional science courses and have been studying independently for the past two years to satisfy this. At this point, I am certain that I would like to study medicine.
The problem:
I met with advisors to discuss my goals. Several laughed and suggested I choose a different career path, others suggested I transfer out. I am reluctant to transfer. I really do love the interdisciplinary approach and the small LAC environment. I was told that aid and scholarships are not common for transfer students, and it would be difficult for me to afford any institution without generous amounts of aid. I am already a sophomore and it is tough to complete a school's core requirements and major requirements in just two more years. I know that post-Bacc programs exist, but for financial reasons it is unlikely that I will be able to complete one. One advisor suggested that I complete prerequisites over the summer at nearby colleges, but I cannot afford this and I must work full time during the summer to support my educational costs throughout the year. I am torn, and the transfer application deadlines are quickly approaching. I would appreciate advice from anyone, and I thank you for reading this lengthy post!
