Perhaps I am being a bit over zealous, but I have been forced to make a choice between being an undergrad TA for a physiology lab in a honors Biology program I am apart of (Biocore) or a writing fellow for the university's Writing Center. I am leaning towards the TA opportunity because I get to work in a lab setting and assist with experimental design as well help student improve their science writing; whereas, the Writing Fellow opportunity would only allow me to focus on science writing although on a much greater volume.
I have not been in able to make a decision. A close friend suggested that my application make look stronger if I branch to another program like the Writing Center. In Biocore, I have been heavily involved in just about everything. I have been on the Board of Directors for a course, and a Peer Mentor for two semesters (basically a mentor/tutor for underclassmen in the program). Next Fall I will be the assistant program coordinator for the Biocore Peer Mentoring Program, which was previously held by a graduate student.
While it shows dedication to a program, she feared that this additional "item" on the resume may just get lost in the mix. I argued that the TA may carry more weight than a writing fellow based on the fact it is deals more with the process of science and not just writing.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. In the grand scheme of things, this decision isn't a big deal, since both are great opportunities. 🙂 I realize that, but any insight would be great! 😀
