Hi

I am new to this website. I am hoping to get some advice. I am currently a US med student and just realized that I want to apply for residency in anesthiology, but have not had any rotation or elective. I was going to apply for Pathology, but recently came to a conclusion that it is not what I want to do.

I have some brief experience/ observation via shadowing an anesthiologist recently, but again no clinical elective experience yet. The only time I can take it is on December, but by then it is too late with application process. Am I doomed?

I need some advice, please.

Thanks for the reply,Otho. I am really worried at this time because I do not have any Anesthiology clinical elective or rotation in my transcript. Isn't it right that the programs look for a rotation/clinical experience in Anesthiology? Would I not be considered because my transcript/ ERAS will not show any elective in Anesthesia? I just can't believe that how great this Anesthia reall is. I wished that I took a course during my early part of my 4th year in medical school.

I am wondering if anyone of you know someone who was in my position. and what option I have. Any input would be much appreciated.
Thank you all

Dude you're ok. Just get some experience on weekends or whenever you can. You need something to talk about during your interviews. And you need to be able to get a letter of rec by about next month or so from an anesthesiologist. I switched about this time of year during my 4th year too. It will be more of a hassle for you, but it's still very doable. You'll be fine if you make it work.

Get on it.

much thanks for the reply. i have been losing sleep over this and been stressed. so you are saying they will look at my application despite not having any rotation in anesthesia?
it just does not seemed right b/c SOOOO many people are telling me that i have no shot and the programs will not consider my application.

you'll be fine. just mention that you were a late switch, but have gotten experience by spending your evenings/weekends rotating with the anesthesia department. Then get a letter from an anesthesia attending saying they have worked with you and that you are enthusiastic and eager. i promise you that you'll be fine assuming the rest of your application is in order. But you're going to have to be proactive about it because none of this is going to just fall in your lap. Stop losing sleep over it and just get it done. You WILL match. Trust me.

Do your scheduled rotation in December. That way you will have a formal rotation under your belt during interview season.

Don't be silly. It's never too late. Just get your s__ together and send it in to eras. Additionally, don't mention pathology in your personal statement. It may confuse people when you apply.

Hey, thank you all for your input.

The advice above is good. If you shadow/help out on nights or weekends, take a couple calls, you'll meet some attendings and you might run into one that's nice enough to write you a letter. Be proactive about it - you have little to lose and you might be able to get a decent personal letter, possibly even from your local chair, PD, student advisor, etc.
