I'm doing a career change, so I already went back and took the prereqs and am doing mcat this august. The idea of basic research and an mstp are fascinating, but to really delve into it, I have to go back for another undergrad degree so I can participate in the experiences both during the year and in the summer.

My question is this: at 30, will schools look at my age and just say no? Yes, from a legal standpoint, I know they can't, but being a woman as well, I can see how someone might think oh, better to get them in while they are young and they are more likely to make it through? I'm concerned that I might spend 2 years and get excited about something that might already be decided for me.

I wouldn't concern yourself too much. I have two friends (both women) that are well into their thirties, and happy with their joint acceptances into MSTP spots in East Coast Schools for Fall 2004.

It can be done.

Just make sure to have a rock solid GPA, MCAT, ECs, and focus on doing a good research project (possible publication, and/or coauthor work will help).

Outside of that, let your other life experiences show that you are a strong applicant. Best of luck in your endeavors. 👍 :luck:

And don't take no crap from no one... (that's probably a given...) 😉 😀

Dead is "too old" for me. I'll be about 45 when I finish the combined program! 👍

As long as you?re academic stuff is on par, then no way. I started med school at 30 and from what I have been able to gather from previous classes, the 'non-traditional' students tend to perform quite well. I think that adcoms view this cohort of applicants as those who have a very serious motivation to become physicians (otherwise, why would you jump into this mess at this stagew of the game?). Just be sure you know why you are doing it and that you can effectively communicate that in your statement and with the interviewers. Best of luck! 👍

I'm in my 8th (and last) year and am 35 - with three kids (as of last month 🙂 ), all of whom I had while in school. Tough? Yes. Doable? Definitely. The schedule is fantastic compared with most other pursuits, so don't sweat the family thing too much.

All in all, it can be a tough row to hoe, but only if you let it.

btw - this was a second (or second and third?) career for me as well. Having done well in my prior endeavors was, and still is, considered favorably.

Do well, and you'll be fine. Good luck.
