Sorry if this question has been answered before but I couldnt find anything on a search.

Ok, I know I am about a year away from step 2 but I wanted to get an Idea of what I should be doing in the future

I took USMLE I (239) and COMLEX I(646). My reasoning was that since I did well enough on usmle I, I would only take Comlex II. I dont know what I want to do yet but I plan on going into a allopathic residency unless I pick something impossible for DO's(Derm, urology, ortho).

Will it hurt me If by only taking the comlex?

Also, When should I plan on taking COMLEX( and USMLE??). Ive heard three answers:
1. Get it over with as soon as you finish 3rd year since you are most prepared then.
2. Take it after you submit applications(oct?), that way you control when/if its released
3. Take it late(Dec/Jan) since a good score on step 1 is good enough and there is no reason to shoot yourself in the foot

Thanks to anyone who responds

Congrats on the great scores. This seems to be a program-specific issue and your answers will vary. Some programs interview and match candidates who still have yet to take USMLE step II. You would get better information by asking the programs directly.

As far as when to take COMLEX Level 2 and USMLE Step 2, IMO you will continue to learn valuable clinical knowledge well into your fourth-year, especially while on electives. Plus you may have more time to study during electives. So, for those reasons I would advise taking Level/Step 2 sometime into 4th-year but before the heavy application season.
