Took the DAT today!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
WOW, nice goooood!!! Why are you retaking it? I don't think you need to.

Thanks. I have a low gpa, so I think it would be best for me to retake it.

pretty solid scores, i think you have a shot of getting in if the rest of your application is strong. your gpa is low so you will need to score well on your interviews....

studying is difficult, it just takes dedication, motivation, and lots of coffee or other stimulants....

Thanks, I just have to go back and keep going at it, any suggestions on what materials to study for bio would be great.

And for organic chemistry I studied my textbook, thats all you need.

Just curious, what makes the bio so hard? Is it just random or do they use tricky wording?

BOTH.....you need know to everything even to make smart guesses or to use process of elimination!!!!

BIO-Some of the stuff in bio I had never seen in my life, I need feedback on this section. I used destroyer, memorized the bio section and it only helped me out on one question. How should I study for this section for the upcoming retake?

What do you mean by only help you out in one question? There were no question about photosynthesis, genetics, embriology, ecology, etc...
I am afraid because I am studying from APcliff biology and destroyer and I feel that everything that was asked in Destroyer I studied from the APcliff...

so which subjects were mainly asked??????

Im no expert on when people should retake, but your OC shows you are certainly a capable mind. I dont think anybody could overlook that.

For Bio you need to use a broader book in cooperation with your destroyer. try cliffs AP bio or Kaplan. I used both. The single most important thing, however is to make sure you get the updates for your destroyer. The more recent the update, the hotter the topics addressed are. Trust me!

For RC i developed my own strategy that helped me hit 21 without even breaking a sweat. I basically used the numbering system of the paragraphs as a table of contents. The first time i read the paragraph i titled it with up to 5 or 10 words on my worksheet without reading depth. Then when i looked at the question i could use my table of contents to locate the answers. Once i figured this system out this section was about as challenging as peeling the banana i ate during my break.

For GC I read kaplan once and then basically eloped with my destroyer to the local library.

Good luck whether you retake or not....

nemetrazol,

Do you work for destroyer? I'm not trying to start anything, I swear. 😉 But I myself am using this book and while it's good for GChem & Orgo, I'm not nearly excited about it as you seem to be.

Well i was not going to start a new thread. But here is my rundown
Bio-It was alot of random questions, alot of SDN ques showed up. Nothing from kaplan.
Chem-Very conceptual, only one calculation, which i probably missed anyways
Ochem-maybe 4 reactions, the rest were acidity/base kind questions
Reading-i had the infamous moral/ethics passage. My heart almost jumped out when it pulled up
Pat- I dint have my glasses with me, so go figure
QR-Very much like destroyer and Topscore. maybe 4 trig Similar problems. But i ran out of time, i probably had like 15 questions left. I know🙁
Good luck guys!!
Let me know if you want to buy anything, My destroyer is up for sale its 2007 Edition Bio up tp 313 Pm Me

Scores-TS(Bio.Chem,OChem)/PAT/AA-20(21/19/21)//17/19
Resources-Destroyer,Kaplan,Campbells/

As far as studying biology, trust me, the best thing to do is get a copy of Campbell's bio book and study all important sections listed from the ADA website. If you have taken undergraduate bio you should be able to understand most of it. I got a 24 on the bio just from reading that book. It is very well written and I think is the perfect study guide. It takes a long time, but try to really understand it, not just memorize. Go back and do the questions at the end of each chapter. My other scores were not as good, but I think that shows just how much this book helped me. Good luck and your other scores are pretty good, its just that ur gpa isn't high also, so you may need to look for a slightly better than average DAT score to try and get it. Jay

Oh- I also used on older Kaplan book, which is more like "Cliff's Notes", you get an overview, but you don't fully understand until you read the actual book.

i had the same....i agree BIO was really broad and random and pretty much all seemed like application questions and not straight forward......i think understanding Campbell and Reece and reviewing using Cliffs did help me.....

I retook the DAT today!!!

Last time I got:
PAT/QR/Reading: 25/22/18
B/GC/OC: 16/19/17 😱
TS/AA: 17/18

Today I got:
PAT/QR/Reading: 21/21/20
B/GC/OC: 19/21/17
TS/AA: 19/20

I was pretty stoked about my improving the areas that schools actually seem to care about (besides my O chem🙁). I'm pleased with my 2 points overall improvement, especially since I'm in the middle of a full semester.

The second time around, I didn't study PAT/QR/Reading AT ALL. It showed in my scores. But I focused on improving my science scores using the DAT Destroyer, Kaplan subject tests, and TopScore. I started studying 4 hours a day on Jan 7.

I used the Dat Odyssey from Dr Romano. Some people say it's over kill but trust me the more you know the better. I also used it in my Ochem class that which really helps you cut corners and gets to the info quickly. I also used destroyer. I have both for sale. So anybody want to buy. Let me know.
