Hey guys, I am wondering if anyone knows where one may be able to attain information about a list(s) that show the top MD/PhD programs in the country. Or, if you guys can give advice about this. This is not for me, but I know someone who is applying and actually has been accepted into a school's MD/PhD program. I will keep that private; however, from the following, please give advice, so I may advise him on this.

UCSF
UTSW
University of Rochester
UAB
Emory
Medical University of South Carolina
UPenn
Baylor
UCSD
Duke
UNC

Thanks guys!

There are about 35 schools with NIH MSTP grants, which are generally considered to be the "top" MSTPs (there are definetly some great programs out there without MSTP grants yet, Ohio State comes to mind). Alll of the schools you listed have MSTP grants, and therefore a in the unofficial top 35.

I think the USNews research rankings are a pretty good reflection of the top programs by research opportunities. The NIH funding is heavily ranked and represented in those rankings, and the dollar values reflect all the affiliates of the schools where you could do a PhD. It's no accident that the top 40some programs and being granted MSTP status correlate almost perfectly.

Ok thanks guys. I was just wondering what the ranking was for those MSTP programs and I'll check out USNews. Also, anyone with personal experience with any of these schools? How are they? Which would you pick over the other? Thanks!

Dude, if you ask ten different people, you're going to get twelve different answers. Tell your buddy to get the list of MSTPs, go visit the schools' websites, and read about their programs. He should pick the ones that are in geographic areas that he likes and that seem to have good research programs in areas that interest him. After he goes on his interviews, he'll probably end up changing his mind about half of them anyway. 😉

Does this also apply to Cornell's Tri-institutional program? I always thought that, if Rockefeller's funding was included, Cornell would be higher. And does Univ. of Pittsburgh's numbers include Carnegie Mellon?
