Hi,

I'm a Canadian student finishing my undergrad at an ivy league school. I have the option of returning to Canada for medical school and getting a great education for much less money. But I know some of the top tier American schools have the reputation, etc to give me an advantage when it comes to future career options.

My question is which schools do you think those are. How far down the med school rankings would you go before saying it's not worth it, and heading back to Canada?

By the way, I am most interested in schools in the East.

Any comments are much appreciated.

Thanks! 🙂

It all depends on which specialty you want to go into. Look at the match lists for the "top tier" schools that you are looking at, and look at the ones for the Canadian schools. Compare, and see which one would be a better fit for you.

I can't answer your question, but a lot of it depends on what field and where you want to ultimately practice, and how good your credentials are. But I will note that there are really only about 10 east coast schools in the top 20, so why not apply to them all and see if you even get in, before you worry about whether it makes sense?

come on' give me a break! 😀

don't tell me a top tier school like McGill or Queens can't compare to top tier US schools!

It's just like saying Brit schools like Imperial College or Cambridge or Oxford are any better/worse than U.S. top tiers.

Now if you want to live in the land of your southern bad boy cousin for the rest of your life (or at least a large portion of it), then go to a med school here.

If you want to practice medicine in Canada, it's a lot more easier to access the licensing/credentialling systems over there.

But in terms of quality? pppphff, about the same.
