Can someone help me out with this question...

#4 If a Eukaryotic cell has a diameter 10 times that of a bacterial cell, proportionally, how much more surface area would a eukaryotic cell have?

The answer is 100 times the surface area. This should be in the math section dammit!! 😀

Also, question 28...The first genetic material was most likely? Answer is RNA polymer. For some reason, my thinking was that DNA would be first since RNA is transcribed from DNA. I havent really found an answer in my study materials.

Thanks.

I remember getting #4 and thinking that question was bogus. I'm assuming they want you to relate volume 4/3piR^3 with 4piR^2 , but that requires that you assume the cell is completely spherical, which is far from true. If you use that method you should get the right answer, but I don't like that question, especially since one of the answers is "cannot determine".

As far as RNA polymers, I recall reading in schaums, perhaps under the evolution or origin of life section where it stats that RNA was the first genetic material... so that's correct.

Thanks Dane. Yeah, you are right, since one of the choices is "Cannot determine", I figured that it was the correct choice since we really dont know the shape of the cells. I call B.S. on that one and I will go ahead and award myself the point because the computer cheated. 😀

I used that strategy quite a bit on TS. Too bad it didn't work so well on the actual DAT. 🙂
