#52 Test 1:
PbO + CO -> Pb + CO2
What is oxidizing agent?
The answer is PbO, but I dont understand why? PbO on the left side has both charges of 0/0 and Pb on the right side has a charge of +4?
So 0 - +4 isn't oxidizing?
Oxidizing agent gets reduced.
You can understand this reaction by 2 half reactions:
1) PbO -> Pb
2) CO -> CO2
Get the oxidation number of Pb in 1)
Left side: PbO, Since we know O is usually -2, Pb must be +2
Right side: Pb = 0, since there are no charges.
Therefore, if you just look at Pb, you go from +2 -> 0.
It gains electrons, therefore it's being reduced.
Again, oxidizing agent gets reduced, therefore, it's PbO.
We can do the same for CO -> CO2, in which C goes from +2 to +4 (oxidation, reducing agent).
