The answer is A but in the explanation it says that this reaction is an aldol condensation. A is not an aldol so would C be the correct answer?

The reaction is

Ph-COH [this is an aldehyde attached to a benzene ring] + (CH3)2 C=O [this is a ketone with a methyl group on each side] first reacted with NaOH then with H3O +

First of all, if the answer is A they should have added heat along with base and H3O+, without heat the double bond will not form and you will just get an alcohol beta to the ketone...

So i think they messed up here, they should have added heat in order to get answer A, w/o heat it would just be a normal aldol condensation reaction and none of the answers are even correct...

Very true. Without heat in the rxn conditions, then H2O cannot be lost. I don't have topscore so I can't see the question.
