cant figure this out
in the following equation, what is the oxidizing agent?
PbO(s) + CO(g)------>Pb(s) + CO2(g)

A. PbO
B. CO
C. Pb
D. CO2

solution says CO---)CO2 + 2e;PbO is the oxidizing agent or the substance that accepts electrons and is reduced in an oxidation reduction rxn....i dont understand lol solution is talking CO doesnt really talk bout PbO in the rxn......also if the equation was in equillibrium would CO2 be oxidizing agent as well?

Based on the equation. The Pb in PbO goes from +2 here to 0 in Pb(s). So it is being reduced, which means it is the oxidizing agent. On the other hand C goes from +2 in CO to +4 in CO2, so it is being oxidized and is the reducing agent. I think in the answer they wrote out the oxidation half-rxn that is being caused by the oxidizing agent (PbO). Hope that helps. 👍

but doesnt PbO have a 0 charge since its a solid too?

Well overall the PbO compound itself has a total charge = to 0. But within the compound, the O has a -2 charge (b/c oxygen usually carries -2), and with a total charge amounting to 0, then the oxidation # for Pb in that compound is going to be +2. Hope that helps.

make it simple:
reduct = gaining electron = loosing oxygen = gaining Hydrogen = oxidizing agent
oxidize= loosing electron = gaining oxygyn = loosing hydrogyn= reduction agent
pbo====> pb +..... loosing Oxygen = oxidizing agent
hope it helped
