as an M2 there's a lot of stuff i learned in Pharm. the problem is though, I can recognize the drug on paper and know its uses, mech of action etc., but not know how to pronounce it correctly. same can go in path i guess... (God knows how many times i've mispronounced sjogren's ). has anyone ever have this problem? how does if affect you during rotations? will the attending drill you if u kill the pronunciation of beta blocker?

thanks

ask m3's you know- mebbe they'll help?

Depends on the attending. If they're interested in teaching, then they won't care and will instead help you out.

actually, the attendings go by trade name so good luck remembering those.

Nobody cares if you mispronounce something/a lot of things, they will simply correct you and move on. You won't be graded down for it if that's what your asking. For some drugs, people just use trade names simply because the generic names are too difficult to pronounce. Actually, drug companies have been trying to make generic names more complicated/difficult to pronounce then their brand names recently, because their thought is that doctors will only know brand names and therefore be less likely to prescribe/tell patients about generic name brands when they become available.

If you didn't already realize it, Lippincott's has pronounciations for many drugs.

I'm only a lowly MS1, but have had some experience in a medical specialty clinic interacting with attendings and residents and struggling to refer to drugs that I've never said out loud before, or in some cases, ever heard of before. I never got the impression that anybody looked down at my for not knowing the "in" pronunciation - we were all there as a team, and people were trying to teach me.

When I hit the wards I hope I'm surrounded by good teachers who will not think anything of my lack of familiarity with certain terms.
