TOURO-NY vs. NOVA

Hey guys,

I have been on here alot but this is my first time making a name and posting. Anyways I interviews in Nova on Nov 9th and Touro-NY on Dec 19th. I got accepted to both. I placed my deposit on Nova already and I was gonna also place a deposit on TouroNY also since its due Thursday.

But I am torn between the schools. I loved both schools. Overall I loved the building/campus for Nova more but TouroNY is in NYC which is where I would feel most comfortable living. I liked both programs since they each have their pros/cons. I have had people try and convince me of either program. Saying either Nova is better since Touro is only a year old so far and has no reputation plus NYC is too expensive to live etc. Then others will tell me how Touro schools have been open for awhile and the NYC one is just the latest. I talked to Obed (Admissions of Touro) and he assured me the school will be accredited once the class graduates as well as answered some random little questions.

Anyways, I am really torn but have been leaning towards Touro for awhile but would like to get some feedback from others who have had experience with each school and everything.

I also just had a LECOM interview but I didnt really get a positive vibe from the school so its down to these two for me. Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it during this tough decision making time.

im actually going through the same thing, only difference is that i got waitlisted at NOVA in september and got accepted at TOUROCOM in November. Now, if i get that call from NOVA, what do i do? I got waitlisted at TOURONV... but i could care less for them. I already declined WVSOM and TOURO MI...

Heres the thing....

NYC rocks.
Miami/Ft. Lauderdale is gorgeous.
NYC is expensive.
Ft. Lauderdale is less expensive.
NYC is open 24 hours. lol.
Touro NY is 1yr old.
NOVA Osteo has been around for quite some time.
Touro NY has a nice building.
NOVA is even nicer.
NYC will get me more familiarized with Urban settings.
NOVA is a draw between urban and semi-urban imo.

I have an interview at Western on the 24th of this month... maybe that will make my decision even harder, if i get accepted that is.

I would pick Nova unless you want to gamble on the quality of your education at touro.Clinical rotations at touro currently are very up in the air. We lost 2 clinical sites this years so far.

You do realize this is from 2008? Cut this whole BS shades you be throwing at Touro. If you do not like the education then seek elsewhere. Dammit, enough with this complains!

The touro system in general is shaaaaaaaady af. The NY campus is a joke. NOVA has facilities that make touro look like a third world country and had better clinical connections.

I have no idea about Touro NY. But from I heard Nova seems to be nicer. University campus, lots of good rotation spots, real research, no attendance policy, just to name a few.

Why are you so upset @TimeTraveller ? Are you a member of the leadership at that school? TouroNY's building and program is a shame to the DO profession. Until its problems are fixed students should continue to air out the dirty laundry Here so other students go in aware. Terrible rotations and basically no research. Do yourself a favor and go to NSU op.

As a Touro NY student, I can confidently tell you to that SDN (and my fellow students) severely exaggerate the problems here, especially when compared to other DO schools.

You should be aiming for the cheapest school possible. Debt is no joke, and it’s really easy to disregard how important it is. I always thought “I’ll have a good job and pay it off easily.”

But then you realize you’re really going to paying off 2 mortgages as a freshly minted attending. If you have 400k in debt (pretty typical for a DO school after compounded Interet), You’ll be making 200 a year. 80k to taxes. 40K for student loans. If you have a home, that’s 50K mortgage. Think about that. This is why my girlfriend left me - she realized that she’d still actually need to have a job.

Gun as hard as you can for a low-COA school.

Your next factor should be if your family and friends are in the area.

I interviewed at Touro Harlem this cycle and had some skepticism coming in, but feel better after visiting. Touro's new dean is a former president of the AOA and is very aware of the problems that plague the school. I asked him some very pointed questions about the future direction of the school and it sounds promising. Either way, they have a decent match list and improving board scores. Sure, the building is a little questionable from the outside, but harlem rent isn't cheap and the facilities are actually pretty good. It's not too different than the other box DO schools in old industrial-esque buildings.
