Transcript Poll

Should I go through bureaucratic purgatory to fetch this transcript for AMCAS?

It's come to this.

Ok SDNers, the sitch:
To include or not to include a transcript... you might think this is an ethical question, but it's really a procedural one. Or is it? I'm going for wisdom of the crowds...

AMCAS requires transcripts from all (i) post-secondary institutions, reflecting, (ii) college level courses taken... no matter whether credit was earned, transferred, or swept under the rug.

Yet, on a whim, I took a course some years back that was provided by a university extension school and it was non-credit, i.e. you could not transfer the credits even if you wanted to because there were none to be had. You could call it a career certificate course in, say, accounting. We did receive grades however, and my grade was dismal to say the least because the class was terrible and I cut my losses and stopped going. And, they provide transcripts.

So is this a post-secondary institution? (probably yes due to its affiliation with a university, even though NONE of its extension school classes are transferable to college). Is it a college-level course? I don't think so.

But, what do you think? We all know it won't be calculated in my GPA since it was non-credit, thank goodness. But, does this fall under AMCAS's required transcript rules? (Do I really have to go to the trouble of faxing/paying for the durn transcript request, risk having another moving part, and include this mistake of a class that looks like a little zit in my application?). PS, My GPA is run of the mill.

Thank you, wise SDNers.

This sounds like something I would contact the school about and then call AMCAS with the facts straight from that school.

What would happen if I applied to a school, got accepted, but then never took a class there. Would I still have to send a transcript from that school to AMCAS?

If you never took a class then how would you have a transcript? You don't need to send a transcript in this case.

You need to submit that to AMCAS anyway. If it was zero credit, your AMCAS GPA won't be affected by your 'dismal' grade. Either way, it still counts as a course that needs to be reported.

😕😕

Stupid AMCAS rules.

The worst one is reported dual enrolled CC classes from high school...like what the f?

Yep, I had a low grade from a 7 AM statistics class that I took in my senior year of high school, came back to haunt me 5 years later as I apply to medical school.

You're going to have to send in a transcript. I don't understand how it was a non-credit course? Either way, whatever the units (0+ units) the class is listed as, that will ultimately be what you list with the other classes on AMCAS.

Considering it's required and won't affect your grade, let alone your admissions decision considering its irrelevance, would you really want to risk having an acceptance rescinded if they found out you failed to report a course? It's not worth the risk, IMO. I'd go through the rigmarole to ensure I was safe on all counts. :luck:

All good advice, thanks gang.

Yeah, application standardization is a pain. And I suppose there's no shortage of unique circumstances and neurotic applicants...

@DocGodfather: it was an arm of the university that did community outreach/career development stuff for which anyone could sign up. So yeah, university-affiliated but not college-level. They offered "non-credit certificates."

I'm going to request the transcript just to play it megasafe. I feel like it was not AMCAS's intention to require these kinds of courses, but they still want everything that comes with a transcript it seems.

👍 Good decision and good luck!
