During my sophomore year, I received a C- in organic. I am currently retaking that course. Also during my sophomore year, I took another chem course with 3 credits for the class and 1 credit for the lab. I took a W for the lab. I was extremely busy the fall of sophomore year and didn't spend as much time as I should have studying. That spring, I got my priorities in order, dedicated more time to studying, and improved as a student. I will be applying to medical school in this upcoming application cycle, and I am studying for the MCAT at the moment. As I am reviewing the MCAT material, I am realizing that I want to dedicate a lot more time to it than I had originally intended. I want to drop an intensive upper bio course to spend more time on the MCAT. Would taking another W screw my application? I think a higher MCAT score would appear much better, but I would love any input.

A handful of W's really ain't gonna kill ya. Taking the MCAT when not fully prepared will though. Study hard and best of luck!

It won't hurt.

I had five Ws and 7 Fs and was accepted to a mid-tier US MD school. You'll probably be fine either way. Highest MCAT score possible though is a good rule of thumb. But...I would avoid another W. Repeating the same mistake twice is what adcoms may think with two temporally distinct Ws.

Another option is to delay your application by a year so you have more time to study for the MCAT and can take a gap year to do something like work as a scribe, TA, or inject supernatant into little slits in a polyacrylamide gel.

Seriously, though, my advice: Reflect on why you have the W and prevent it from happening in the future.
