Hope all is well! I’m mid-cycle and have managed to land some acceptances.

I just wanted to ask: I’m currently enrolled in a master’s program at a foreign university. I will finish my course requirements by March, my dissertation will be done in May, and I will have my final grades back by June.

However, I’m somewhat concerned about the timely conferral of my degree, as this is a common thread across the post-acceptance requirements where I’ve been admitted. Like most schools in my country, my current university typically doesn’t confer graduate degrees until many months after the end of the program, despite the fact that I’ll be done with everything and have all my grades ready by the spring. I am trying to petition to have my degree conferred in July, rather than in the winter.

Basically I wanted to ask:

1) Do medical schools even care about receiving transcripts for foreign master’s programs? I’ve heard conflicting things about whether this actually matters, or if it’s more for undergrad/US-based graduate programs.

2) If I can provide all of my final grades, as well as documentation from my university (such as a letter from my Dean) that I have passed/done well in my program, would that be okay in place of degree conferral pre-matriculation?

I figured that I would be fine as long as I completed the actual degree requirements before matriculation, and because my country is a fairly common one to study in during a gap year so I’m sure this has happened before. My advisors here are 100% aware that I’m applying to/I’ve been admitted to medical school + they are completely supportive of me matriculating before my conferral.

Congratulations!

It depends on how you define "medical schools" and "caring about foreign master's programs." For those who have to help document your educational journey to the great database in the sky (Student Clearinghouse), we would like that information once you get it. If you're worried your offer gets rescinded, you should ask the admissions director/dean about accepting evidence of degree completion (if your university's registrar office does this); regardless, your proof of conferral ultimately is required for your student file, whenever that happens.

Thank you! I was going to contact my schools and clarify my timeline once the break ends.

I was curious, how many schools are looking to “document my educational journey” on Student Clearinghouse (I thought this was a national program concerned only with American schools)? I had browsed old SDN threads where folks said they never needed to send their foreign graduate school transcripts to the schools where they were matriculating — is this true for the majority of schools? Or will most places want to see?

I do have one acceptance that I know only wants my undergraduate degree, but I’m really hoping this won’t be a dealbreaker everywhere else.

Happy holidays!

That's why it's always good to ask the schools. The Clearinghouse might not care, but the university/school might differ.
