Hello everybody,

How easy is it to transfer from one program to another (same residency)?
My husband is offered a work position in a different state and I was wondering how easy is it to transfer to another program? Do programs with good reputation accept other than PGY1 residents?

Best bet is to call the program director at the places you are interested in to find out if there is an opening.

It mostly depends on if there is an opening. I don't know of many programs who will accept residents in the middle of training unless there is an opening because someone left. They generally fill the spots they are funded for. Programs with good reputations and programs with bad reputations both have occasional openings, although I would wager they are more frequent in the latter.

pathologyoutlines.com has a listing of open residency positions, I believe, as do some other sites (see FAQ). But the best bet is to call around and ask. The worst that happens is that they tell you no.
