Hello,

If the first two years of DDS/DMD and MD are the same, is it possible to transfer from DMD/DDS program to MD program, by the end of the first or second year? Many schools offer both MD and DMD/DDS degrees.

I know this sounds crazy, but is this possible?

PS: same question posted in dental forum

The first two years of DDS/DMD and MD are NOT the same. There is a DDS resident in my medical school to pursue a MD and he has to start from year 1.

Columbia used to have a program that let the oral surgery residents get an MD. I can't remember if they did the course work before the residency or during it but it wasn't a transfer from dental school. The other poster is correct that at most schools there is some overlap the first two years but they are not the same.

at my school the first year has some overlaps (gross anatomy, histology, and another course I think), but they are NOT the same.

I heard a presentation today by an MD, DDS. I'm pretty sure he did his DDS, then did a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery that granted him the MD along the way. Not sure if he had to take any "MD" classes or not.

There are oral surgeons in my class. They graduated dental school, did one year of residency, and now are starting during 2nd year of med school. So, no, they are not the same.
