transfer from DO to MD 3rd year

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it possible to transfer to MD school after finishing 2 year of medical school at a DO school?
would they need the USMLE 1?

Its highly unlikely but possible. The MD Schools will give you a pretty hard time wanting to no why you would switch DO to MD in the 3rd year😕

Good Luck

Rules of transfer are pretty much the same between LCME-accredited schools :
  • You need to have the support of the school that you are leaving.
  • The school that you anticipate transferring to has to have an opening and be willing to take you.
  • You have to have a very compelling reason for transfer.
  • You have to meet the requirements for admission/transfer to the school that you want to transfer into.

Transfers are very, very rare and usually for extenuating circumstances under most conditions such as illness of a close relative or extreme financial hardship (trying to support two households). Each school decides if your reason for transfer has merit or not.

The next thing is that you have to contact the Deans at both schools and get their support and counseling. Things like being homesick, having a boyfriend/girlfriend at another school, hating the curriculum, school, climate and building are not going to work. Not wanting to have the initials DO behind your name instead of MD isn't going to work either.

If you hate being an osteopathic physician, there are a couple of offshore schools that will "sell" you an MD degree.

I'm not really sure that he had the "support" of his DO school though - AFAIK he lobbied on his own and once he was accepted, said "see ya!" It took a LOT of effort from what I understand, and he had no extenuating ("legit") reason aside from really really really not being fulfilled with a DO. As others have said, it's rare, but can happen for the right person with a great amount of perseverence.

my n=1 involved a student who took 2 years off AFTER step1/comlex/second year and did research with howard hughes. As it turned out, the research project he worked on was a relatively innovative topic with its founder located at an MD school. connections were made and he transferred. his DO school was less than thrilled with him, but his dean of students wrote him a great letter. Not sure of his step score, but I assume it was great.

I doubt this person had planned to transfer, but he was really into research and happened to get lucky. You can try to come with a plan to make it happen, but you should realize the rarity of it actually happening.

Best of luck, and remember, you're gonna be a doctor regardless of the letters behind your name!! 👍
