Hello everyone,

I know this thread has been done before but UCF has recently gone through major renovations including building their own medical school so I am wondering if the general consensus has changed.

I just entered UCF as a junior and am contemplating transferring to UF to finish my degree. Reason being is that UCF is overcrowded and I might get a better education at a smaller university such as UF. Also, it is my understanding that UF has been known as being the go to university in Florida for anyone wanting to pursue medicine. Is this still the case? Will I have a leg up during application time if my degree is from UF as opposed to UCF?

Thank you!

School name recognition matters to some extent, but much less than your GPA and MCAT. Florida is a good state for MD admissions, so doing well at UCF will be much more important than doing average at UF if your long term goal is to get into UF's (or any for that matter) medical school. You should go to whichever school you can afford and where you will do best.

I doubt UF would give you any advantage over UCF applying to medical school. I was a cracker jack student at UF, went through Junior Honors Med. But going up through Duke and Harvard, I never thought UF gave me any advantage. There are just too many bigger name fishes out there. UF is just a good school, like hundreds of others.

Do well at UCF. UCF will suffice. Rolling stone gathers no moss.

Not going to matter. As a fellow FL resident who has been fortunate enough to interview at both of those this cycle definitely it won't help. Focus on doing well in your classes/mcat and you'll be golden.

UF has substantial name recognition outside Florida, which UCF lacks. I’d say transfer.

However be prepared to explain to UCF med why you transferred when applying though.

With all due respect why? Does UF have better name recognition outside of Florida? Yes to some degree. Will that help OP get into medical school in any substantial way? I don't think so. If you feel it would I would be interested in hearing your reasoning. I definitely could be mistaken but having very recently interviewied at almost all of the Florida schools I'm fresh with the memories of which schools my fellow interviewees came from which was all of them. All Florida schools know both UF and UCF will give a solid premed education.

Out of Florida both UF and UCF go under the Florida public school category. The only difference I could see mattering is research and letters which are primarily about the OP's iniative anyway.

I treansferred out of UF because I thought it was overcrowded, especially with premeds. I went to a larger city and it was the best choice of my life because of how much new stuff was going on there. You can’t get that in Gainesville. It’s a town in the middle of nowhere that wouldn’t exist without the school.

UF can ride on the laurals of it’s undergrad rep but schools like UCF are bringing in so much more money overall.

Don't hate on Gainesville bro. And UF doesn't just have a good undergrad it has the best medical school in Florida and many top 50 graduate school programs. As far as UCF vs UF, UF is a top 10 public university in the nation and UCF is ranked around 90 among public universities. That tells you all you need to know. Also at my med school interviews this year, many out of state students I talked to applied only to UF an UM in Florida. Why are they doing that? Because UF has a good reputation

All you need is MCAT,GPA, and Experience
Just finish ur undergrad at UCF have a good time and shine, avoid the overly competitive nature at UF undergrad. You’ll be okay
This is coming from a USF grad who interviewed at UF and UCF
