Hi fellow SDNers,

One of my friend is considering transferring to NYC schools for personal reasons. Do any of you know of any successful cases in the past that you have heard about or know about?

If yes, what does it take to be a successful transfer candidate? How many apply to begin with? I have already told him that there will be very limited seats IF ANY at all....

Furthermore, will it be bad for him at his present medical school if he doesn't end up getting a spot at the other university ... knowing that he wanted to transfer out.....

Any other info will be much appreciated?

It is far harder to transfer in med school as compared to undergrad, very low odds. And I would think it would be extremely hard to transfer up in terms of rankings, if that is a notion. Schools aren't in the business of poaching students from other schools, and tend to try and keep a very carefully controlled number of students in their program. From what I can tell, most schools seem to only allow transfers for the start of the third year, and require good board scores, recs, etc. But I defer to anyone who has actually taken this road.

Sorry, I should have mentioned it... he is currently second year and will be taking his boards this June and wants to transfer for clinical year i.e. 3rd year. As far as rankings go, I would think that most schools in NYC (except Cornell and Columbia ... which are not that ahead IMHO) would be at par with UNC...Don't you think ... if we take direct ranking then UNC is #2 primary care and #21 research...which should be up next year ...

I uderstand that shools try to keep a very tight regulation on # of students but students do drop out every year (well may be not every year)..some take time off for studies, personal reasons etc .... and schools do want to fill in those seats...

From what he told me he has a very strong personal reason to transfer ... I don't know

Any takers....

If he has a strong personal reason and he is transferring to a private school it should be no problem. Schools will make allowances for spouse transfer or sickness.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was going to be about you wanting to transfer and I got kind of annoyed.

I know that USC accepts transfers for the clinical years (2-3 a year). I personally know a guy who transfered from George Washington to USC several years ago. Just check with the schools individually.
Good Luck!

I had two people in my class transfer out for personal reasons. Both got married to spouses who worked within the universities. They went from my good but relatively unknown midwest state university to Brown and Yale.

I think it would depend on the strength of his personal reasons. Good luck! :luck:
