Recently met a new transfer student here in a foreign medical school for Americans who finished three years at an ivy league medical school. He is starting from year 1.

This person is very nice and very sincere so I don't want to assume any bad reason but can anyone help me explain why someone would spend 3 years of tuition and complete 3 years of U.S. medical school (including passing step 1) and then transfer into a foreign medical school to restart?

Have you guys seen students leave allopathic schools to go abroad?

Failed rotations
Failed end of rotation exams
Killed a patient....although if you can find someone to blame, you're totally in the clear. 😀

Nah, failing usually results in having to repeat things. The more likely reason for outright dismissal late in med school would be acts suggesting a serious lack of professionalism (lying, cheating, plagiarism, falsifying records, felony conviction). Things a school can't get past by letting him/her remediate.

Probably the most likely reasons. My school also kicks you out if you fail Step 1 3 times (can't get licensed in this state at that point). Also, there's eventually a point where I think you'd get kicked out for other academic issues, but this would be after multiple remediation attempts.

Agree, something was done by the student.. That required disciplinary action that the school just COULDNT digest..

If you are so curious, why not ask the person in question rather than speculate on a public message board? You could then get the actual story rather than the assumptions that you are seeking from a public message board.

Maybe he is just full of **** and lying to you about transfering from an Ivy leage medical school.

Has your school ever had to use that rule? That seems like such an unlikely scenario to even make a rule about it.

I have a feeling your friend believes that a foreign education is superior 😉

Just a thought
